Netflix is rebooting some major ’90s animated shows, and here’s what we know about each of them. After originally being a hub for all sorts of brands and entertainment, the streaming wars are slowly chipping away at what Netflix can offer. This has seen them ramp up their original content output and say goodbye to keeping big IPs like Friends, The Office, Star Wars, the MCU, and more.

While Netflix is concentrated on finding more original shows that can become hits like Stranger Things, mass-appealing films like Bird Box and Murder Mystery, and awards contenders like Roma and The Irishman, they are not completely leaving known properties behind. One of their recent trends is targeting popular animated programs from the ’90s, leading to their recent revival of Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim.

Both properties received movie reboots this summer that brought fans back to these 90s hits. Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling debuted at the beginning of August and showed Rocko adjusting to life in 2019. One week later, Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus premiered and showed ZIM struggling with his confidence amid his ongoing feud with Dib. There are known plans for two more reboots of beloved 1990s and 2000s animated shows, with Avatar: The Last Airbender and Winx Club set for new takes in the coming years. Unlike Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader ZIM though, these reboots will be live-action – and here’s what else we know about them.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Upcoming Nostalgic Animation Reboots On Netflix

Based on Nickelodeon’s beloved 2000s animated series, Netflix is set to bring Avatar: The Last Airbender into live-action. This was previously attempted with M. Night Shyamalan’s movie, but Netflix is aiming to avoid some of the major pitfalls that befell that adaptation (such as whitewashing). Original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are returning as showrunners for the Netflix version. The series does not yet have any cast members, but production is expected to begin sometime in 2019.

Masters of the Universe

A more recent announcement by Netflix, they’re set to be the home of a Masters of the Universe revival. The anime continuation series was revealed at Power-Con Convention, with fan-favorite director Kevin Smith announcing he will serve as its showrunner. The show will pick up immediately after the events of the original animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series that ended in 1985. Based on the continued popularity of the He-Man brand, anticipation is high for what the series will hold. Mattel TV is producing the series, which does not yet have a release date.

Winx Club

Netflix is also developing a live-action adaptation of the popular Italian animated series Winx Club. The streaming service was first linked to the remake last year following their release of two seasons of World of Winx, a spinoff to the original series. The live-action series is reportedly in pre-production with Brian Young (The Vampire Chronicles) set as its showrunner. No casting announcements have been made for the lead teenage fairies Bloom, Stella, Flora, Musa, Layla, and Tecna.
