Upside Down Is SciFis Ultimate Romeo & Juliet Story

Romeo and Juliet is considered one of William Shakespeare’s most iconic works, detailing Romeo and the Montagues as they battled with Juliet’s Capulets. However, the lovers wanted away from this violence, hoping to sneak off and be together. Ultimately, though, a miscommunication led to tragedy with Romeo taking his life, thinking Juliet died, and Juliet awakening from her slumber to end her life as well.

The classic popped up in modern cinema in the 1996 romantic-crime drama from Baz Luhrmann, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes and ended the same way as the source material. However, this story was adapted again in 2012 for the sci-fi genre, with Juan Diego Solanas’ Upside Down being the ultimate take on these characters.

Now, sci-fi hasn’t shied away from this tragedy, with movies like Equals, which saw Kristen Stewart’s Nia and Nicholas Hoult’s Silas as drone workers who fell in love in a society that prohibited emotions, touching on the subject. It felt like a take on Equilibrium by an administration just suppressing love to keep the peace, but it lacked personal stakes, which is what Upside Down had with Jim Sturgess’ Adam and Kirsten Dunst’s Eden.

Adam was a poor and melodramatic teen from the Down, and Eden was rich and privileged from the Up. Both worlds shared a unique gravitational field, but Adam’s world operated under normal physics, while Eden’s world hung upside down. Still, they met each other at a cliff and sparked a romance, which, of course, was forbidden because the Up didn’t want to fraternize with people whose planet they mined for oil and resources.

But while it started as a story of caste, it evolved the drama to more than just a family feud. It became a tale about social justice amid corruption, capitalism and exploitation, with soldiers waging war on trespassers from either world. An accident eventually caused Adam to get shot and Eden to fall back to the Up, suffering amnesia. 10 years would pass where he would work on cosmetic creams, only to realize she was still alive. This led to Adam working with allies and trying to use Trans-world, the company that bridged both planets, to get back to her. But it was a huge crime, and it created political conflict with Adam losing loved ones and his career for it.

And it got even more complicated when the Top brutalized and offered Adam freedom if he would give them the formula he made that allowed passage safely to both worlds without the subjects being harmed. Adam acquiesced, but while he thought he’d never see Eden again, his ally Bob would run his own scheme in a riveting finale to ensure all rights remained with Adam, which meant the government would have no choice but to listen to his wishes. As such, Adam reunited with Eden and had kids, truly making the film a scientific and romantic marvel. It felt like a breath of fresh air and a high-concept spin on star-crossed lovers, with the two leads dodging gunfire, jail and death in a story that proved that love transcended gravity.
