Valhallas Gangster Tease Shows How The Spinoff Can Beat Vikings

Vikings: Valhalla will continue the legacy of the characters from Vikings, but according to the cast, it’s going to have a very different tone and a gangster vibe, meaning that Valhalla can beat Vikings. Historical drama has become a popular genre among viewers, and one of the most successful TV shows from that branch in recent years is Vikings, created by Michael Hirst. Vikings premiered in 2013 and came to an end in 2020 after six seasons, but the Viking era is far from over, and it will continue in the sequel series Vikings: Valhalla.

Vikings covered the beginnings of the Viking Age, from the Lindisfarne raid (shown in season 1) onward, following legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and later his sons Björn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar, who carried the story until the end of the series following Ragnar’s death in season 4. Vikings: Valhalla, then, will take viewers a century after the events of the main show to follow new characters (of which many have connections to those in Vikings) during the final years of the Viking Age, and even though both shows cover the same historical period, Valhalla will have a very different feel.

Following the death of King Edward the Confessor, three lords make claim to the English throne, and meanwhile, Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett) leads Greenlanders across the North Atlantic. His half-sister, Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), has become an anti-Christian following a traumatic event involving Christian Vikings and becomes the leader of the Old Norse religion against rising Christianity in Scandinavia, and starts looking for a new home for her people. However, she’s drawn into a relationship with Torsen, a Christian Viking from a royal family and who is part of a battalion assembled by King Harald Hardrada (Leo Suter) to avenge the massacre. Being a Vikings show, viewers can expect lots of action, blood, and many deaths, but according to a cast member, there will also be a gangster vibe, and that’s what can make it better than the original show.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Vikings: Valhalla actor Stephen Hogan (who plays Ealdorman Sigeferth of Wessex) shared a bit of what to expect from the sequel show and revealed that it’s “basically like Goodfellas […] it’s Viking gangsters”. Vikings had its fair share of conflict on the battlefield and behind closed doors, but a Vikings show with gangster elements – such as organized crime, betrayals, elaborate plans to meet an immoral purpose, etc – along with the epic type of battles the original show had can elevate Valhalla beyond the quality and greatness of Vikings. One element that was often criticized about Vikings was the lack of complexity of its characters, which Valhalla can do differently thanks to those gangster elements, which would require more layered characters.

Although Vikings was successful, the quality of it decreased following Ragnar’s death, and many critics and viewers feel it never recovered from that, so the team behind Vikings: Valhalla has to take note of the flaws of the main series in order to not make the same mistakes. Adding gangster elements to it is already a big step towards a new and better direction, giving Vikings: Valhalla the potential of being better than the series that started it all.
