James Kennedy started out as a guest on Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules in season 2 before becoming a recurring member and later, a full-time cast member. Now that the series is on season 9, James has been through a lot over the years. From his relationship with Kristen Doute to getting fired from SUR to becoming sober, James hasn’t always had it easy.
However, James also doesn’t always make it easy on himself. There are times where James’s behavior is diabolical and degrading, but it’s hard to deny that it doesn’t make great reality television. And while James is on a better path in season 9, he doesn’t make it easy to cheer him on when he goes too far with his friends.
He Told Tom To Cheat On Katie
James and Katie have never gotten along. It wasn’t until James became sober that the two started repairing their friendship in order to attend parties together in a civil manner. Astrologically, their signs don’t seem to get along on the zodiac. Despite their new friendlier relationship, it’s hard for fans to forget how they used to treat each other.
User Rowha reminded Reddit of one of James’s low-blows to Tom Schwartz when he told him “he should cheat on [Katie]” because of his detest for her. It was hard for Katie to hear something like that.
James Fat Shames Those Around Him
James has a tendency of being a hot mess when he’s in an argument with someone in the group or is pushed in a corner. There are also times where he’s messy towards people when it’s unprovoked. There were numerous occasions where he body-shamed his so-called friends.
User JessicaLalor told Reddit, “I’m so sick of James being a f***ing bully and using the lowest, lamest body-shaming attacks against Katie.” They continued writing, “Weight has nothing to do with what anyone has said or done, it’s such a lazy, rude attack.” James has also body-shamed Lala Kent’s former fiance, Randall Emmett, for his weight, along with Lisa Vanderpump’s son, Max.
He Belittles Raquel
After his relationship with Kristen Doute ended, James was single for a while before diving headfirst into a relationship with Raquel Leviss. All these years later, James and Raquel are still together and they’re now engaged. But there are still times where James belittles his fiance.
One Redditor reminded fans of the time Raquel and James got into a fight over Peter’s party. They wrote, “It shows he has a lot of self-esteem issues and unfortunately doesn’t seem to be on a path to growth that a lot of people are rooting for him to be on.” In moments like these, James is anything but a good boyfriend or partner. He can be quite manipulative actually.
James Doesn’t Respect Lisa
James has betrayed most of his friends on Vanderpump Rules but one of the worst betrayals was his treatment of his boss, mentor, and mother-like figure Lisa Vanderpump. As a DJ at her establishments, he doesn’t always respect her business and time. It’s because of his behavior at work that Lisa has had to fire him multiple times.
Redditor ChefWannabe_ reminded Vanderpump fans why he’s been fired so many times. “Some people seem mad that he got fired for simply calling Katie ‘fat,’ but the truth is that Lisa has fired James multiple times, and each time, it was for being drunk on the job,” they wrote. If James respected everything that Lisa had done for him (like taking him under her wing), he wouldn’t have acted out so often.
His Relationship With Kristen Was Dark
At the start of his time on the show, he was in a new relationship with former cast member, Kristen Doute. Kristen was fresh out of a relationship with Tom Sandoval and was spiteful towards him for being in a new, happy relationship. To get back at him, she started dating James. However, Kristen and James’s time together became toxic and they soon became one of the lowest-ranking couples in the show.
User Daymcn told Reddit “She was filmed hitting him!” at Scheana’s wedding. DeathByStar reiterated their toxicity by writing, “[Because] that relationship was so toxic and they were both so toxic. It was like watching them ‘one-up’ each other on the crazy train.” It was for the best for everyone when they ended their time together.
Those Cheating Rumors
Not only does James belittle Raquel on random occasions, but there were also rumors that he cheated on her. Some of the women involved even came forward and spoke to his girlfriend (now fiance) about their time with James. Regardless of what was said, Raquel stood by James’s side.
One of the theories that make sense is that Raquel stayed with James—despite the rumors—because she wanted to stay on the show. Khickey8 wrote, “Maybe not all the allegations are true but LaLa standing there telling Raquel she has seen him cheating with her own two eyeballs is pretty telling if you ask me.” Raquel proved her dedication to her man over the rumors because the two are still together.
His Rage Texts
James isn’t just aggressive face-to-face, he also goes too far in texts. In a list for some of the worst moments in Vanderpump Rules, a Redditor wrote,”[James’s] fight with Kristen when he spit on her door, he said some disgusting things. And rage texting Raquel.”
His rage texts to those he’s fighting with are low and incriminating. He’s insulted Raquel via text multiple times. In season 8, he threatened to break up with Raquel after she fell asleep after a night out on the town. He also called her horrible names that affected her self-esteem and his messages to Raquel (and Max in season 9) are hard to watch.
How He Spoke To Christina
Christina wasn’t a full-time cast member on Vanderpump Rules but she made appearances on the show as the workers at SUR were close. In one scene, James was under the influence and was rude to those around him. When Christina intervened to keep James in line, he responded in a less than flattering way.
His insults made Christina leave the table in frustration, which resulted in a larger fight with Jams over his language. Baaaasil-mania agreed that this was a messy moment, writing, “Jax going off at James and telling him he ‘can’t speak that way around women’ for telling off [Christina].” It was a moment that did not age well.
One Word: Fireball
The entire cast of Vanderpump Rules has had their fair share of mistakes after drinking too much, but James takes the cake. Jojosafias noted that James went too far when he was “chugging fireball by the fire” while others watched in horror.
He had no boundaries or respect for his well-being or the well-being of others. Fans questioned whether or not that behavior would follow in season 9, and it looks like the drinking isn’t but his low blows have.
James’s Lyrics On Jax & Faith
Jax and Brittany have had horrible moments in their relationship on the series, especially when he cheated on her with their coworker, Faith. As always, James added gas to the fire when he created a song where he reminded everyone that Jax and Faith slept together while Brittany (Jax’s girlfriend) was in the audience.
While some of Reddit found this moment funny, Rhondaashlep did not. They wrote, “It’s Jax’s fault for cheating but it’s immature AF to make a joke about someone who’s already hurting over getting betrayed by their [significant other].”
