Venom: Let There Be Carnage is being advertised as a Christmas-themed rom-com for its Blu-ray release. The first Venom movie was released in 2018, focusing on the characters of Venom and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as the two become bonded together. This Marvel Comics adaptation was not popular with critics, only earning 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, however, audiences found it much more enjoyable, giving it 81%. Audiences appear to love the oddball pair, as they showed their overwhelming support for a sequel. Venom 2 appears to be just as popular with fans after becoming a box-office hit when it was released in October of this year.

While there were some romantic elements throughout Venom, these themes are much more prominent in Let There Be Carnage. Venom 2 showcases the relationship between Eddie and Venom, the two are pictured sharing a domestic life together, arguing like a super-powered old married couple. Venom also has an infatuation with Eddie’s ex-fiancé Anne (Michelle Williams), which is brought up repeatedly, but does nothing to take away for his deep feelings for his host.

IGN released a trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s Blu-ray release that promotes the movie as a wintery Rom-Com. It highlights multiple different love interests throughout the trailer, including Anne and Dan and the film’s villains- Cletus Kasady and Frances Barrison, alongside Venom and Eddie. There is a spotlight put on other rom-com’s produced by Sony, helping to set up the festive-love story. The upbeat, Christmas love song used, and cheesy quotes further the idea that viewers should expect a love story.

This isn’t the first time Sony has promoted Venom as a holiday romantic-comedy. Sony initially used this tactic for the first film’s Blu-ray release and continued the trend of promoting Venom and Eddie’s relationship as part of a Christmas rom-com for Let There Be Carnage. While this advertisement appears to be played for laughs, there are still undeniable queer themes littered throughout this film, unlike other Marvel movies.

The trailer follows the same type of light-hearted, comedic genre as the films, but this doesn’t deter from its blatant romantic tones. Marvel has a history of shying away from diversity, as seen throughout several MCU movies, and Venom’s limited connection to major MCU movies has likely given the series more leeway with this type of content. The community of people invested in Eddie and Venom’s love life has only grown with the release of each film. Fans of Venom: Let There Be Carnage have shown enthusiastic support for this type of storyline, so it would make sense that Sony would only try to encourage it and take advantage of people romanticizing the holiday season.
