Venom 2 What Song Is In The Trailer

The official trailer for Venom: Let There be Carnage is out, and it features not one, but two carefully chosen songs that give a look into the tone of the upcoming sequel. The original Venom released in 2018 to a lackluster reception from critics and fans but a strong box office performance, kicking off the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters that will continue with Morbius. Venom 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 24, 2021.

Venom marked the fan-favorite Marvel antihero’s first trip to the big screen since 2007’s Spider-Man 3, where the character was played by Topher Grace. The reboot saw Tom Hardy assume the role of Eddie Brock and told the origin story of Brock bonding with the violent Venom symbiote. Venom 2 will introduce popular comics villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage (Woody Harrelson) in his first live-action appearance. The official trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage has hinted at a weirder, less serious tone, which could bode well for the finished product.

That shift in tone for Venom 2 is reflected in the trailer’s two songs. The first, which is sung by the symbiote as it attempts to make breakfast for Eddie, is a mangled version of the George and Ira Gershwin classic “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” The song was originally written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance, where it was performed as a duet by legendary performers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The song’s message of two inherently opposite people somehow managing to get along is comically twisted in the Venom 2 trailer to reflect the relationship between Eddie and the symbiote.

A second song then plays as backing for the rest of the Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer – “One,” by Harry Nilsson. Like the first song, “One” reflects the story of the movie, this time in two different ways. First, it’s another joke about Eddie and Venom’s relationship, as they are both two different beings and one and the same. It also appears to be an allusion to the film’s villain, Carnage, bringing a second symbiote to the streets of Earth for the first time since the end of the first movie.

Overall, the Venom 2 trailer teases a more absurdist superhero movie than its predecessor, with some undertones of dark comedy. Hopefully, that can help the movie succeed where the original fell short, embracing the more bizarre aspects of the Venom character and his comics storylines without taking itself too seriously. Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in theaters on September 24.
