Cosplays have always been a highlight of the convention experience. While events, panels, and stalls are always exciting, it’s the sea of colorful wigs and handmade props that give conventions character. A sad but needed safety precuation, the COVID pandemic has put conventions everywhere on hold, leaving many hobbyists without their main creative outlet.

Many cosplayers have been able to make their own activities at home, mostly through social media outlets. However, the absence of conventions is still felt heavily, but that should just make the return to conventions fonder. In the meantime, fans who miss being able to dress up can take cues from social media trends.

Cosplaying at Home

The cosplay hobby has been kept alive thanks to social media. Cosplay TikTok videos and Instagram photoshoots have given cosplayers an outlet for showing off their costumes and are a form of art of their own. TikToks set to music allow cosplayers to put on a sort of mini-performance and get into character in their own homes. Some cosplayers have created their own at-home or outdoor photoshoots and showed off their photo editing skills. Even though conventions are on hold, there’s still many opportunities to have fun with cosplay, and sometimes it’s fun to just wear them around the house.

Without the threat of con crunch, some cosplayers have also been able to take their time working on elaborate costumes. Other cosplayers, however, haven’t had the motivation to make new costumes since there’s currently nowhere to take them. Cosplay is an expensive hobby, after all, and it can be hard to justify new projects if they won’t be seen in-person. There are some rewarding experiences that can’t be found outside of the convention hall.

Returning to Conventions

The experience of seeing everyone’s handiwork, including some unexpected costumes, is a big factor in what makes conventions special. While online recognition is exciting, it’s not quite the same as being able to show off a cosplay and all its details in real life. Someone exclaiming a character’s name at a cosplayer and eagerly asking for a picture can be both exciting and satisfying. It’s the reward for all of the work that goes into a cosplay. Fans can make friends, participate in con activities, and people-watch in the convention hall. After going so long without these experiences, fans likely will be coming back with new vigor and appreciation.

Once conventions are able to start again, many cosplayers will likely be bringing in their best cosplays. With games like Genshin Impact that have gained most of their popularity over the last year, this will be the first big opportunity for fans to meet up and do photos together. Con friends that normally met up at events due to long distances can finally reunite, and Artist Alley sellers will finally be able to return to their merch stalls. After such a long time apart, fans will be finding lots of fun and relief in their favorite hobbies.
