Vikings: 10 Most Shocking Parts Of The Final Season

Vikings has finally aired its last season, and the historical TV show delivered on the violence, the shock, and the expectations that fans had.

Vikings might have ended but the show’s fans have no reason to shed tears since there is already a spinoff on the way. The sixth and final reason is a long and action-packed ride. Bjorn’s reign as the new ruler of Kattegat isn’t an easy one as he has to constantly watch over his shoulder for multiple enemies such as Ivar and the Rus Vikings.

Viewers are also introduced to a new villain—Oleg The Prophet—who is basically Ivar on steroids. Oleg takes lives with glee and glamor like Ragnar’s villainous son. A lowkey historical fact is also revealed. The name Russia is derived from the Rus Vikings. Shocking but not as much as some of the events that happen in the season.

10 Vigrid Gets Tortured And Dismembered

Ivar’s life is in danger after he gets overthrown in Season 5. Luckily, Kattegat blacksmith Vigrid smuggles him out of the city after Bjorn and his army seize control. In the Season 6 premiere, Ivar and Vigrid are seen passing through the Silk Road. At Kievan Rus’, the Kievan army captures them.

The two are brought before Prince Oleg the Prophet who orders for Vigrid to be tortured. His arm gets tied to a tree where he is mutilated and swung around as body parts fly all over, some falling on Ivar. He then dies a few minutes later.

9 A Freydis Lookalike Pops Up

Ivar is shocked when he meets the Russian princess Katia. She looks exactly like his dead wife Freydis. He is confused since he strangled Freydis to death not so long ago.

As time passes, he becomes more and more convinced that she is Freydis. But when he asks Hvitserk if he recognizes her, he says he can’t. This means the resemblance is simply Ivar’s imagination. Series creator Michael Hirst confirmed that Katia is simply a manifestation of Ivar’s guilt and is in no way the ghost of Freydis.

8 The Grain Raid

The Grain Raid’s major twist is the death of Bjorn’s son Hali. During the raid, the Skogarmaor attempt to attack the grain storage in order to steal the food. Before the attack, the villagers place child spies in the woods who warn the villager of the arriving bandits.

When the bandits face no opposition, they think no one is present so they happily proceed to plunder. Archers surprise them with arrow attacks before Lagertha and a couple of villagers ambush them. As the bandits flee, the brave Hali attempts to chase them but White Hair slices his body.

7 Oleg Poisons His Brother Askold

Despite Oleg killing Vigrid, he and Ivar bond over the fact that they both killed their love interests. The two later make their way to Novgorod to meet Oleg’s brother Askold who is a Ruthenian ruler.

Their aim is to retrieve Kievan Rus heir Prince Igor. But soon after Askold agrees to a sitdown with the two ruthless men, Oleg poisons him and has all his men killed as well. Oleg’s other sibling Dir tries to arrest him but Oleg demonstrates unique prophetic powers hence he is spared.

6 Harald Rapes Ingrid

After Bjorn Ironside marries Ingrid as a second wife, Harald becomes jealous and frustrated. He has these emotions despite the fact that Bjorn is his ally.

Before combining forces with Bjorn to fight Ivar and the Rus Vikings, Harald forcefully brings Ingrid to his room. He proposes that she becomes his only wife instead of living life as Bjorn’s second wife. He also promises her that she’ll be Queen of Norway. Her refusal angers him so he decides to rape her.

5 Hvitserk Accidentally Kills Lagertha

Lagertha’s death wasn’t received so well by fans. Given how brave a warrior she was, it would have been much fair for her to die in battle. Sadly. that’s not what happened.

In the tense “Death and the Serpent” episode, Hvitserk is overcome with paranoia. He beats Amma and walks away in the rain. In his state of uncontrollable delirium, he begins hallucinating about Ivar. He spots a snake as he is wandering around and thinks it’s Ivar. He goes on to stab it multiple times, only to realize that it’s Lagertha.

4 Gyda Sacrifices Her Own Life To Follow Lagertha To Valhalla

During Lagertha’s funeral, Kattegat slaves are asked to sacrifice themselves. A woman named Gyda steps forward and offers to die so that she can accompany Lagertha to the Norse heaven of Valhalla.

There was another girl named Gyda in the series before so her appearance is a bit confusing for viewers at first. The new Gyda explains that she inherited her name from the previous Gyda who died from a plague. She explains that she is happy to be chosen by the gods hence the valkyrie stabs her to death.

3 Ingrid Is Revealed To Be A Witch

There is rapid character development for Ingrid in the final season. Initially, she is just a resident of Kattegat who is lusted after by Bjorn and Harald. She then becomes a skilled shieldmaiden and helps Bjorn during the Rus war.

After Bjorn’s death, she is reluctant to inherit the throne but she throws her hat in the ring after talking to Gunnhild. Erik then sees her performing strange rituals on Bjorn’s grave and realizes that she is indeed a witch. She later uses her powers to turn Erik blind. With Erik unable to see, she has an easy climb up the hierarchy.

2 Olaf Gets Burned To Death

After losing the battle, Harald and Olaf are taken into captivity by Oleg. Harald is ready to die but Olaf is eager to survive and become a slave or soldier to the Rus. Oleg has other ideas. He decides that Harald will not be granted his wish of being killed, just to piss him off. He also sanctions the execution of Olaf.

Igor is given the task of ending Olaf’s life at the stake. As Olaf is tied on a chair at the river bank, he gives one declaration of his faith. A reluctant Igor then lights the fire and Olaf burns to death.

1 The End Of Ivar

In the series finale, Ivar leads the Norweigian army in a fierce battle against the English. This time, the gods aren’t on his side. After terrorizing people for years, he is finally meeting his Waterloo.

His condition worsens before he declares that he is Ivar The Boneless and his legacy will always remain. He is right about that since the real Ivar is remembered to this day. Unable to fight anymore, a Saxon soldier nervously approaches him. Ivar tells him not to be afraid. The soldier stabs him repeatedly.
