Vikings was full of betrayal and death but it was also a story of love and loyalty. Harald spent his whole life trying to become king of Norway so he could have Ellisif as his queen, but such a relationship could never work because Ellisif was in love with someone else.

Harald still tried to find love many times but all the relationships he entered were obviously doomed to fail. “In my heart, I am still married to Bjorn,” Gunhild told him just before she threw herself into the water to join Bjorn in Valhalla. There was no way she could live the rest of her life with Harald and Ingrid. Harald wasn’t the only unlucky person at love, though.

10 Rollo & Siggy

Rollo was in love with Lagertha even before she got married to Ragnar which is why he never showed interest in other women while Lagertha was around. Then came his betrayal of Ragnar which put him out of favor with Lagertha.

Beaten and broken, he was picked up by Siggy who had just lost her position as queen as well as her husband and had no one to console her. When the two started their relationship, it was obvious that there was nothing permanent about it. They were just two people who had lost their places in life. Rollo’s interest in Siggy faded the moment his place by Ragnar’s side was restored.

9 Ragnar & Aslaug

Many called it betrayal while others called it fate but no one could really explain the reason why Ragnar ever slept with Aslaug in the first place. He obviously loved Lagertha more than any other woman and was willing to forget about Aslaug if Lagertha forgave him for cheating.

However, Aslaug came heavily pregnant with the one thing Lagertha couldn’t give Ragnar; a son. Although Aslaug was a good mother, she wasn’t the partner Ragnar needed and the two fell out of love long before their deaths. They were only living together because of their children which is why Aslaug was forced to start picking slaves for Ragnar.

8 Lagertha & Sigvard

Ragnar and Lagertha were always meant for each other which is why Lagertha never found anyone she loved as deeply as her first husband. However, with Sigvard, it was not love at all.

Lagertha seemed to have agreed to marry the abusive man just to keep a position of strength. Sigvard was weak and insecure and always lived in fear of Lagertha’s strength. It was obvious from the start that Lagertha would have to kill him one day because he was abusing her.

7 Lagertha & Haehmund

Bishop Haehmund was never supposed to fall in love with anyone which is why his fling with Lagertha was such a surprise. Lagertha had just been in a relationship with Astrid but she was obviously still in love with her late husband and there was no way Haehmund could fill that void.

When Haehmund confessed his love to Lagertha, she didn’t have anything to reply to him. Then came the decision to go back to England which meant that Haehmund would have to choose between Lagertha and his god and, of course, he chose the latter just before his death.

6 Ecbert & Judith

Who saves a daughter-in-law from punishment for adultery only to go ahead and commit the same sin with her? Judith was no longer in love with her husband and was dismissed by everyone for being adulterous but she didn’t deserve to suffer so much.

Ecbert, on the other hand, was a shrewd man that didn’t care about anyone but himself which is why he took advantage of her situation. He was obviously not willing to make the relationship public and there was no way it could work because the two were not in love.

5 Harald & Astrid

Harald was unlucky with women but his attempt with Astrid was one step too far. He was unable to convince Lagertha to marry him and help him become king of Norway, so he chose to kidnap her lover instead.

It is not clear why Astrid never tried to run away but she was never in love with Harald. He was caring though, and tried his best to show love to her, but Astrid was always in love with Lagertha. She betrayed Harald and even refused to carry the baby that may have been his, choosing to die instead.

4 Ivar & Freydis

Ivar confessed to Freydis that he had never been loved his entire life and had to struggle so much because he was a cripple. However, the truth was that Ivar was a psychopath that couldn’t recognize love even when it surrounded him.

Freydis also contributed to his deterioration by encouraging him when he killed people claiming to be a god until it was too late. Freydis became the victim of his mental instability as he chose to kill their son rather than raise a cripple. There was only one way a relationship with Ivar would end; in death.

3 Athelstan & Judith

Athelstan was the first priest to fall victim to the conflict of faith that came when Saxons were taken to Daneland. He was not very sure whether the Norse gods were the right ones to worship or whether he should stick with Jesus.

Then came Judith, a woman that fell deeply in love with the priest who wasn’t sure about his faith. They could never be together because Judith’s place was in King Ecbert’s court with her husband. Their short-lived relationship was deep but it was obvious that it would end in a disaster.

2 Bjorn & Snaefrid

Torvi did everything a good wife could do while she was with Bjorn, but he didn’t love her enough to give her the attention she deserved. When he came back from his trip to the Mediterranean, Torvi realized that she had lost him. Bjorn then spotted Snaefrid and decided to marry her before even getting a proper introduction.

It seemed like a Ragnar-Lagertha kind of relationship because Snaefrid was also a shield maiden but they were not really in love. It was always bound to fall apart at some point although Snaefrid died before the marriage could happen.

1 Ubbe & Margrethe

Ubbe marrying Margrethe was a miracle in itself because it was difficult to tell where her heart was. She shared Ubbe and Hvitserk even after Ubbe declared his love for her, which was obviously bad news for him.

Margrethe was also dealing with her own demons and could never make a good wife to Ubbe. As Ubbe matured and knew what was right for him, he chose Torvi, a like-minded person.
