Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Rollo begins the Vikings series with a fierce loyalty to his brother Ragnar and love for his family and Viking tribe. He wants to raid, find treasure, and bed a few women along the way. He didn’t appear to have any serious ambition until his brother began to move up in their world.

By the end of the series, Rollo, the Viking man through and through, has been baptized a Christian, married a French princess, and had children that would live as Christians in his domain. He became a Duke in his own right in Normandy and tried to defeat Ragnar in battle more than once. Many things about this path, including his destination, simply don’t make sense for Rollo.

10 Still Bitter About Lagertha’s Choice

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

When the show opens up, Bjorn is 12 years old and it is later revealed that Ragnar and Lagertha have been together since he was conceived. After more than a decade, Rollo is still blatantly flirting with Lagertha. He shows signs throughout the show that he isn’t happy with Lagertha’s choice to be with Ragnar.

It makes no sense that he’d still be bitter after all those years and with Lagertha and Ragnar having two children between them.

9 Anger For Athelstan

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

In season 1, during a raid, Ragnar comes upon the monk, Athelstan. He wants him for a slave and to learn from him because he is fascinated by the culture of the Christians. Rollo wants to kill Athelstan and when Ragnar tells him he can’t and why, Rollo goes into a rage.

Somehow, he believes that not being allowed to kill Athelstan simply because he feels like it means that Ragnar has all the power. It makes no sense that something so trivial would make them less equal.

8 Agreed To Be Baptized As A Christian

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Rollo is a warrior and he shows that as he battles by the side of his Viking comrades. He paints his face with the blood of his enemies and puts his shield on the wall with all the others. He sails, raids, and takes women as his in the heat of victory. He is a Viking through and through, but when Ragnar needs one of his own to be baptized as a Christian, as per the request of the English King he’s dealing with, Rollo volunteers.

He later acts like it’s a joke and tries to kill more Christians than anyone, to prove himself. It makes no sense that he volunteered for the process in the first place.

7 Insisted On Staying With Siggy

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

After the death of Earl Haraldson, his widow Siggy was left alone and her life was in danger. Rollo vouched for her and kept her alive and the two began a relationship shortly after. But he was still in love with Lagertha. Siggy told him that he could be a great man and he believed her at first.

It wasn’t long before he was off with other women and left her behind until she got angry about it. He showed time and again that he didn’t really want her so it makes no sense that he insisted on staying with her.

6 Sided With Jarl Borg

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Throughout season 1, Ragnar shows that he is loyal to Ragnar and the rest of his brethren. He even stands up to torture when Earl Haraldson’s men try to get him to turn on his brother. He never wavers, although it could have led to his death. He follows them into battle whenever it’s asked of him. Siggy tells him that he could be better, then Jarl Borg tells him that he will elevate his status if he turns on his brother and sides with him.

Jarl Borg is essentially a stranger and Rollo has no idea if he will even live up to his promises. It makes no sense that he’d turn on his brother for something so uncertain.

5 Descended Into Oblivion

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Rollo sided with Jarl Borg but he couldn’t kill Ragnar when it came time. He conceded, Ragnar’s people won over the rest of Jarl Borg’s forces, and Rollo’s punishment was to apologize. Four years go by and when the show picks back up, Rollo has descended into drunken depression.

Apparently one lost battle and a forced apology to the brother he sought to defeat was enough to bring him down. He’s supposed to be a Viking warrior. It makes no sense that one lost battle would have him descend into oblivion.

4 Abandoned Siggy For England

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Siggy stuck by Rollo for years and got nothing for her trouble. When Rollo was gravely injured, Siggy took care of him. Once he got better and was put in a situation where he had to fight for his survival, he was filled with vigor. He wanted to raid again and there was an opportunity to go back to England.

Siggy didn’t want him to go but he did and basically abandoned her. She was loyal to him through everything and when she asked him to stay, he abandons her.

3 Married Princess Gisla

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Princess Gisla isn’t happy about the marriage arrangement to Rollo. She says she’d “rather be burned alive than be married to Rollo and suffer him laying a hand on [her].” Rollo insists over and over that he’s not a Christian. He agrees to this Christian marriage to a woman who doesn’t want him.

Being a Viking didn’t offer the opportunities he wanted so he went with the English alternative. He greeted Gisla in her native language and committed to being a Duke. It makes no sense that he’d ever turn his back on being a Viking.

2 Killed Everyone In The Viking Settlement

Vikings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Rollo

Rollo committed to being a Duke but he also loved his people. He makes it seem like the arrangement is a way to forge something lasting between his new people and his Viking brethren.

But then when they leave and only the Vikings in the new English settlement are left, he takes his English soldiers into the woods around the settlement. They kill every man, woman, and child in the settlement, slaughtering them all and putting an end to the whole thing before it ever started. The ambush is not the Viking way to do things and the action itself makes no sense for Rollo or his agenda.

1 Waited To Tell Bjorn Of Real Parentage

In season 5, Rollo finally admits to Lagertha that he knew all along he was Bjorn’s father. He then admits it to Bjorn, who rejects him as a father. He spent all of Bjorn’s life being an uncle. He saw Bjorn start to fall away from his father and knew he needed guidance. He had a thousand chances to tell Bjorn what was really going on and he never did.

Ragnar died and he still never stepped up and this, in particular, makes no sense at all. After Ragnar died, there was no way he could hurt his brother’s feelings by coming forward. He raided with Bjorn all the way across the Mediterranean sea and into Africa. Bjorn had trouble trusting Rollo. That conversation could have helped him.
