Hvitserk, the second son of Ragnar’s and Aslaug’s, due to his different story decisions from his brothers, bears many unique secrets and mysteries.

Hvitserk is the second son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Queen Aslaug, and he’s a main character during the latter three seasons of the Vikings series despite making his appearance from the second season. His personality is mostly shaped by his close relationship with his other brothers, as well as by some of Ragnar’s best and worst character traits.
Nevertheless, when the story forces them to take different paths, Hvitserk makes some pretty unique choices that shape his personality, with interesting details regarding his background and the reasoning behind his choices that most fans could easily miss if not attentive to detail.
10 Inherits Ragnar’s Religious Curiosity
One of Ragnar’s most unique moments in the series is when he chose to spare Athelstan, who ended up becoming his most trusted friend despite their religious differences. Ragnar’s main reason was that he was curious about other religions.
Hvitserk carries a similar trait, as, in the finale of the show, he chooses to convert to Christianity and is named Athelstan. In a way, Hvitserk seems to be carrying on Ragnar’s and Athelstan’s friendship.
9 Didn’t Fight In His First Raid
His first raid was with Ragnar in Frankia, Paris, which is when he received his arm ring. Although he was there and ready to fight, Ragnar didn’t let either him or Ubbe get involved and had them wait at the Vikings’ camp, only to retreat later when their allies were defeated.
This was also his only battle with Ragnar, who, after this defeat disappeared, and made this one of his most disappointing decisions to the fans, only to return years later for one final raid in England in which Hvitserk didn’t join him.
8 Resembles Aslaug More Than Ragnar
Out of all four of Ragnar’s sons with Queen Aslaug, Hvitserk is the only one to inherit most of his traits from his mother, a person full of hidden details that many fans missed.
He believes he is important solely because he is Ragnar’s son while constantly demanding respect out of others that he hasn’t earned. Even though he dislikes Aslaug and believes that she was a bad mother, he seems to carry on a lot of her traits.
7 Acts First, Thinks Later
One characteristic of Hvitserk’s behavior throughout the series is that he acts first and thinks later. This is why, when he learns about the destruction of the Vikings’ Wessex settlement that Ragnar kept a secret, he threatens to even kill Ragnar if he ever returns.
Nevertheless, when Ragnar returns, Hvitserk remains silent. At the same time, throughout the story, he is constantly struggling to choose between his brothers since he always chooses impulsively based on what he prefers at the time.
6 Follower, Not Leader
Throughout the series, Hvitserk takes multiple different decisions, with all of them having one common point: he is always following one of his brothers. Either following Ubbe as a child or Bjorn and Ivar later on, Hvitserk never stays alone.
At the same time, he is never taking decisions and avoids taking a leading role in any planning, always providing some follow-up thoughts of agreeing to the plan proposed by any of his brothers.
5 Biblical Snake Vision
During season 6, when Hvitserk was hallucinating, he pictures Ivar as a serpent crawling back to Kattegat. He catches him and stabs him to death, only to realize that he had killed Lagertha.
Picturing Ivar, the one he saw as evil at the time, can be interpreted as influenced by the Bible where the serpent symbolizes evil and temptation. This influence could even be one of the reasons why he decided to be baptized during the finale.
4 Naive
Hvitserk loves Thora, while Ivar mentions that she should be killed or sacrificed. Despite what Ivar says, Hvitserk leaves them alone, and, when he returns, as expected, Thora is killed.
Despite being completely obvious and expected, Hvitserk seems fully surprised as if he didn’t expect it. Hvitserk is more of a fighter than a thinker, and that is reflected in his naive behavior.
3 Fights Ubbe, But Can’t Kill Him
In the raid of Kattegat, Hvitserk is forced at some point to fight against Ubbe in one-on-one combat. Even though Hvitserk is known mostly for his combat skills, he instantly gives up, drops his sword, and even allows Ubbe to kill him.
However, Ubbe also refuses to fight him and drops his sword. This is similar to Ragnar and Rollo’s first fight when Rollo, in one of his worst decisions in the series, sided with Jarl Borg and betrayed Ragnar but still wasn’t able to fight him.
2 His Name Means ‘White Shirt’
Hvitserk’s name translates to ‘White Shirt.’ This is either because his color was more pale compared to his other brothers, or because of his attitude in battles where he was always late to get involved and get blood on his shirt, thus mostly having it white. Another interpretation is that ‘White Shirt’ is a nickname given to those who convert to Christianity, as they wear a white shirt during the ceremony.
1 Official Name Is Halfdan
According to history and as mentioned by Express, his real name was Halfdan, and Hvitserk is only a nickname. The show used the name Hvitserk to avoid confusion between him and Harald’s brother, Halfdan.
Nevertheless, in history, Hvitserk takes the role of the show’s Halfdan and sails the Mediterranean with Bjorn, while Harald’s brother, Halfdan, didn’t exist. The only Halfdan that existed other than Hvitserk was Harald’s father, which is why Harald is named Harald Halfdansson.
