10 Defend Her Actions Against The Jarl (Ragnar Did)

During their first solo raid to England, one of the Jarl’s goons tried to assault Lagertha. Being the warrior she was, she was not letting that attempt go unpunished and ran him through. When they got back to Kattegat, the Jarl was ready to execute her for her crimes. However, Ragnar was ready to use his power and influence to protect her. With the strength of his followers, he defended her actions to the Jarl. After all, she had every right to defend herself. It didn’t matter if he was one of the Jarl’s men or not.

Because of Ragnar, Lagertha never had to deal with the Jarl’s wrath.

9 Safeguarded Kattegat (Lagertha Did)

During Ragnar’s many raids, Lagertha was the one who safeguarded and led Kattegat while he was gone. That is, as long as they were married. Lagertha led with respect and dignity, as all women liked her and men were intimidated by her.

Without her assistance and strength, Kattegat would have definitely fallen into chaos. Especially with all the tragedies that happened while he was gone. His reign would have fallen to pieces before he could even really enjoy the spoils of it. Instead, he would’ve come home to a village in chaos and someone else probably in charge.

8 Respected Her As A Warrior (Ragnar Did)

While Shield-Maidens did exist, they were few and far between. Moreover, they didn’t often get the same respect as their male counterparts. Lagertha was desired by a lot of men for her prowess, but few of them truly respected her as a powerful Viking warrior. Ragnar, though, definitely did.

Sure, the guy struggled to respect her as his true equal (the guy was kinda full of himself) but he did respect her more than most men. Their marriage had its bumps and flaws, but at least he saw her for who she was: a mother and a Viking. It’s one of the best things he ever did for her, see her as she was and treat her accordingly.

7 She Chose Him Over His Brother (Lagertha Did)

From the second he met her, Rollo Lothbrok was smitten with the beautiful shield-maiden named Lagertha. They even had a steamy relationship for a little while. That is until his brother Ragnar saw her. With his combat capabilities, handsome looks, and universal charm, he won her over and stole her heart.

One of the best things Lagertha ever did for Ragnar was choosing him. For the rest of his life, he had her support and love. That’s not something to take lightly, especially from someone like her. From Lagertha he got Bjorn, her great warrior skills, and military support in so many battles. Her choosing him changed his life.

6 Built Them The Farm (Ragnar Did)

The happiest, simplest time of Ragnar and Lagertha’s lives was on their farm with their two children, Bjorn and Gyda. They were part-time Vikings, full-time farmers and parents. While they didn’t have glamorous lives, they were happy and loved. During this time it felt like their family was strong and unbreakable.

Ragnar built that farm and their lives with the riches he got pillaging, and once it was there, Lagertha managed it all. Together they made something wonderful. If only Ragnar didn’t have such serious ambitions. Maybe then they could have been happy on that farm, forever.

5 Encouraged His Ambition (Lagertha Did)

While most people followed the Jarl dutifully, Ragnar had his own ambitions for power and riches. Between the Jarl position and pillaging England, he wanted more than the farm he started with. Lagertha always encouraged his ideas and goals. No one even was sure that there would be land across the sea, but he went anyway and she supported that.

No matter how selfish or arrogant Ragnar could be, Lagertha’s love and encouragement only made him stronger. His ambition was the key to all of his growing power, and her helping him grow his ideas, dreams, and confidence helped foster that ambition.

4 Taught Bjorn To Be A Warrior (Ragnar Did)

Though Bjorn was a natural fighter, he didn’t have any experience before he went back to live with his father. Lagertha did her best to raise him, but she didn’t let him be the warrior he wanted to be. He just had so much pent up energy by the time he went to his first battle.

Ragnar gave Bjorn his first taste of combat and helped him hone in on his skills with a shield and other weapons. Lagertha may have a lot of problems with Ragnar, but he did well to make Bjorn a stronger Viking exactly when he needed that kind of teaching and support.

3 Loved Him All Her Life (Lagertha Did)

Throughout his life, Ragnar had so many people abandoning him and betraying him. All of his friends, family, and lovers hurt him in one way or another. That is, except for Lagertha. Though she did divorce him, she still kept on supporting him through many wars and adventures. She also encouraged his relationship with their son, despite her anger and frustration with him.

Truth is, no matter how he wronged her, Lagertha loved him. And she loved him until the day he was gone. While Ragnar never treated her like she deserved, her love made him a better man, and he should always appreciate and honor her for that.

2 Supported Jarl Lagertha (Ragnar Did)

When Lagertha stabbed her abusive husband, the subjects of her new village supported her. After all, they knew he was a jerk the entire time.

However, when working with outside lands, Lagertha and her people knew that others wouldn’t be as open to a woman leader. Not without a lot of convincing, at least. However, when Ragnar needed help, she couldn’t stop herself from stepping in. And, on the flip side, Ragnar gave her the full support that she needed to convince other Jarls that she was a powerful and proper leader. Lagertha always deserved to rule, and Ragnar helped make that possible.

Ragnar may have left Lagertha because she couldn’t bear him the many sons he dreamed of, but she did give him the most important one: Bjorn. Bjorn was a natural warrior, fierce and powerful. He’s spent his years growing up a great fighter, winning amazing battles and becoming a powerful leader. He even has quite a few children of his own.

Bjorn is the most charismatic and regal of his children, and also the most loyal. The guy is so much like his father that even if he’s not his biological son, Bjorn is still his. Before he passed away, Bjorn was clearly his greatest pride and legacy and always will be.
