Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Over six seasons of the History Channel’s Vikings, fans have watched with anxious anticipation as their favorite characters overcome overwhelming odds in the face of imminent defeat. Sadly, they have also had to cringe in despair and utter shock as certain characters met their bitter and untimely end in even the most innocent of moments.

Unfortunately, like in life, all characters – whether good or bad – do not always get the end that is befitting of their actions. Sometimes, a character’s story arc ends before it even seems to begin, cut short by an unexpected consequence of a past encounter or a fleeting emotion. Let’s rejoice in those who arrived in Valhalla with a smile on their face and a story of heroics in their heart, and mourn for those who lived a fitting life but met a less than admirable fate.

Disclaimer: Obviously, spoilers covering all six seasons will be included.

10 Deserved More: Bishop Heahmund

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

It was clear from the beginning that Bishop Heahmund wasn’t going to make it past season six but a warrior of his caliber deserved a better death than just being stabbed in the back, killed by a nameless character in the background.

Heahmund was one character who never really fit into the stereotypical villain or hero role, which was partly what made him so interesting. A tortured soul, who was on the cusp of finding redemption in his love for Lagertha, only to fall just short of a happy ending.

9 Fitting End: Aslaug

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

The husband-stealing, second wife of Ragnar Lothbrok, was a character few felt sorry for when Lagertha put an arrow in her back. Aslaug had stolen Lagertha’s husband and her rightful place as Queen of Kattegat. Her life was always Lagertha’s life to take, making her death one of the more rewarding deaths of the show.

Aslaug might have given Ragnar the many sons he desired but she never truly acquired his full affection or trust. Aslaug ended her reign the same way she began it, as an outsider who never truly belonged in the place she ruled.

8 Deserved More: Sigurd Snake-In-The-Eye

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

The third son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug might have had the serpent Fafnir in his eyes, just like his famous dragon-killing grandfather who also shared the same name, but Sigurd never really lived up to expectations as a child of Ragnar, before finally meeting his end at the hand of his brother Ivar.

Sigurd’s resentment of his mother was always the underlying root cause of his problematic relationship with Ivar, whom he felt his mother coddled too much. Unfortunately, much of this wasn’t fleshed out before he met his end.

7 Fitting End: King Horik

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Ruthless and power-hungry, King Horik was such a great deceiver that he even managed to deceive himself. His overbearing desire for obedience revealed a little too much of his true intentions. His attempt to sow seeds of distrust among Ragnar’s closest allies was bold but ultimately futile.

In the end, Horik’s inability to treat allies as equals led to him being surrounded by enemies. Ragnar ended him and his family in the same manner Horik intended to do to Ragnar and his family. As the old saying goes, what goes around comes around.

6 Deserved More: Kalf

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

The Earl of Hedeby, Kalf was handsome and ambitious but ultimately overshadowed by Lagertha. He usurped an earl only to believe he could co-rule with the same person he had just betrayed, representing the boyish naivete that eventually got him killed in Vikings’ season four.

Even after Lagertha threatens to kill him, Kalf continued to believe he could win her over with his professions of love. It would have been interesting watching them try to co-rule; alas, it was not to be, as this usurper didn’t live past his wedding. When Lagertha makes a threat, it is a promise.

5 Fitting End: Siggy Haraldson

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

The ultimate survivor, Siggy, went from the wife of an earl to the servant of her husband’s killer. She lived a life of deep grief. Yet, she persisted on with the belief that one day she would reclaim what was taken from her by Ragnar.

While she never regained her former status in Kattegat, Siggy did die a hero, saving the sons of Ragnar from drowning in a collapsed frozen lake. Upon seeing her deceased daughter’s face in a vision, Siggy gave herself to death, reuniting with the family she had lost all those years ago.

4 Deserved More: Athelstan

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Athelstan’s fall, rise and eventual death in season three was one of the more shocking moments in Vikings. The world just wasn’t big enough for two devoutly religious characters within Ragnar’s inner circle, especially when their religious philosophies were on polar opposite spectrums.

Therefore, it wasn’t shocking when Floki finally murdered Athelstan. Though, it would have been fascinating to watch Ragnar’s progression with Athelstan as they pillaged Europe as a team, pondering religious philosophies and life’s most mysterious secrets for a few more seasons. Alas, it just wasn’t to be.

3 Fitting End: Ragnar Lothbrok

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Speaking of Ragnar, he had a great run for four and a half seasons. as he went from farmer to king and legendary warrior among his people. A thrilling rise to power for a man of such humble beginnings, even as a descendant of Odin.

Ragnar made for a complicated figure who aspired to great heights and did what he had to do to achieve his goals. Yet, for all his triumphs in battle, Ragnar never could find peace in life. He welcomed his death by King Aelle with open arms, in the hope of finding what he had been searching for, for so long in the afterlife.

2 Deserves More: Rollo

Vikings 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Like his brother Ragnar, Rollo was never content with what life gave him. His jealousy of his brother was his life’s story arc, forever cursed to be second best. A proper ending for such a complex character would have been one dying by his brother’s sword or dying for his brother’s life.

After the death of Ragnar in season four, Rollo’s story lost its luster and a satisfying conclusion seems impossible. Now, the only thing fans can hope for is Rollo dying a Viking’s death saving his brother’s son Bjorn from his enemies.

1 Fitting End: Lagertha

The Seer foretold that Lagertha would be slain by one of the sons of Ragnar but no one could have guessed it would be Hvitserk, who ended her run of six seasons. While her death might not have been how many fans imagined it, it was her words that made the conclusion of her life fulfilling.

As Lagertha drew her last breath, she spoke of how she lived a full life and would now be reunited with her one true love, Ragnar, for all eternity. This made her ending chillingly poetic.
