Fans agree that Ragnar and Lagertha are the most iconic couple on the show Vikings. The show often centers on their adventures, and whether they’re married or together, their relationship is key to many victories. As a married couple, they support each other and know that they’re both humans who make mistakes. They give as much as they take.

After they got divorced, Ragnar and Lagertha’s relationship didn’t end. They continued to support each other in various ways, but there were times that Lagertha would have been better off with someone else. Here are five ways Lagertha and Ragnar were perfect together and five others she could have been with.

10 Perfect Together: Farmers In Kattegat

Lagertha has mentioned more than once throughout the series that she loved farming the land. She and Ragnar had a nice life in Kattegat for many years simply raising their children and working their land. Before Ragnar’s dreams became bigger than their farm life, they were happy there and they had what they needed.

The series opened with the family smiling, laughing, teaching each other and their children, and enjoying being a family in their home. It is presumed that since Bjorne is 12 they’ve been happy all along.

9 Could Have Been: Rollo

After Ragnar won Lagertha’s hand in marriage, Rollo still secretly loved her. He flirted with her and was seen doing so when the series opens, 12 years after she and Ragnar got married. He made exceptions for her after he became Duke of Normandy, even though it cost him.

Finally, in season 5, after Bjorn had long since grown into a man, Rollo confessed that he knew he was Bjorn’s biological father from the beginning.

8 Perfect Together: Lagertha Supports Ragnar’s Adventures

Ragnar’s dreams range from adventuring west to finding out about the whole world. Lagertha may be a happy farmer but she is also a shieldmaiden, a warrior. She supports Ragnar and they embark on new adventures together.

Earl Haraldson doesn’t support Ragnar’s raids at first and Lagertha is by his side to help him and protect her family. She stands against adversity with him and helps him reach for his dreams, even if she’s happy staying home with her children and working her land.

7 Could Have Been: Siggy

Lagertha shares a bed with Ragnar and Lagertha one time and later on, she has a relationship with Astrid, another shieldmaiden and warrior. Siggy was a dear friend to her and since she was the wife of Earl Haraldson, she’s shown her capabilities in standing with a leader when things get tough.

Siggy knows how to support someone in power and her relationship with Rollo showed she can also motivate someone to be better. Lagertha and Siggy together could have done great things with Lagertha as a queen.

6 Perfect Together: Equals In Battle

Ragnar was first drawn to Lagertha because of her fighting skills. Her warrior spirit captured his adventurous heart. In battle, they were both ferocious and fought with vigor together. They had good battle knowledge and were both excellent and imaginative strategizers.

When Ragnar needs troops, she comes to the rescue and helps him win battles he would have lost without her. They got divorced and they were still equals in battle and allies at war.

5 Could Have Been: Aethelwulf

Lagertha is happy when King Ecbert wants to give the Vikings land to farm in England, along with gold as a payment to stop raiding their villages. Aethelwulf, Ecbert’s son, is married to Judith but they hate each other. She tells Aethelwulf that they’re married in name only.

Aethelwulf is considered a great warrior. He and Lagertha could have formed an important alliance and both would have been better off. Lagertha could work the land with her subjects, and as an accomplished warrior, would be a good queen equal to Aethelwulf in intelligence and strength.

4 Perfect Together: They Were Good Co-Parents

Lagertha and Ragnar were equal in everything, including their parenting roles. They never put all of the parenting on one person and never forced their children into typical roles. Bjorn wanted to be just like his father and Gyda loved that her mother was fierce and gentle at the same time.

When they separated, they didn’t force the decision of who to live with on Bjorn. They let him decide and when he decided to go with Lagertha, Ragnar respected his decision and told him to take care of his mother. When it came to their children, they were partners, as with everything else they did.

3 Could Have Been: Kwenthrith, Queen Of Mercia

Kwenthrith fought to keep her kingdom when precedent dictated that it went to the next male heir. Lagertha took over her late husband’s earldom also without precedent and styled herself “Earl Ingstad.” They are two women who want to rule the people they love and rule well.

They are smart, strategic in battle, and both mothers who know the importance of balancing their rule with their responsibilities as parents. They both also have a wild streak and can be extremely volatile when angry. Alone, they battle to keep what they’ve earned. Together, they could have been unstoppable.

2 Perfect Together: Side-By-Side As Strong Leaders

After they divorce, Ragnar and Lagertha’s relationship continues as friends. They support each others’ paths, fight together, join forces as allies, and help each other keep what they’ve earned. When Ragnar is gone and Kattegat needs a ruler, Lagertha goes back and takes on the role herself.

Ragnar worked hard to become King in Kattegat and Lagertha was by his side as an ally. She saw that Aslaug had turned against Ragnar in the end and when she took the town from Aslaug, she also shot an arrow through her back, loyal to Ragnar through and through.

1 Could Have Been: Erik “The Red” Thorvaldsson

Erik is fun, loyal to her son Bjorn, and not ambitious enough to try to overthrow or suppress Lagertha’s power. Erik is an outlaw and a mercenary, ready to fight for whoever pays the most, but things change for him when he meets Bjorn.

He is someone that would be a fierce addition to Lagertha’s armies as an ally to her son, a loyal friend, and a lot of entertainment with no strings attached. After everything she went through, it could have been exactly what she needed.
