Vikings Sons Of Ragnar Ranked By How Many Battles They Won

“I promise you, my son, that one day the whole world will know and fear Ivar the boneless,” Ragnar declared in prophecy to his youngest son. Ivar took those words seriously, and always went onto the battlefield with a strategy that would ensure victory. He understood that his enemies would always underestimate him, so he used that to his advantage became one of the greatest fighters in Vikings.

Ivar’s approach to winning was brutal though, which is why most fans preferred Ubbe and Bjorn’s approach. The elder brothers were great fighters too and they knew how to shift odds of battle in their favor. Hvitserk and Sigurd, on the other hand, preferred to follow their siblings into battle rather than lead but they were not any less capable as fighters. Each of Ragnar’s sons always went to battle with a winning mentality. Here is a look at how each of them performed in the end.

5 Sigurd

Sigurd was the first of Ragnar’s sons to die but he showed lots of promise and would probably have outperformed most of his brothers in battle if he had the chance to live. He was the first to propose the unity of Ragnar’s sons in forming the great heathen army. During the two battles in England to avenge his father, Sigurd fought bravely. It was his first time to fight in any battle but he proved himself as a true Viking, fighting until the end without a scratch.

He didn’t support Ivar’s ambition to lead the Great Heathen Army because he knew that Ivar would never achieve Ragnar’s dream of finding fertile land to settle. The argument between him and his younger brother took a turn for the worst. Unfortunately, he was the victim so he didn’t get the chance to win any more battles.

4 Ubbe

The shouts of Ubbe’s name after he defeated king Frodo in England were the closest that Ubbe came to being crowned king. He didn’t win as many battles as Bjorn and Ivar, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have wins. He was the last Lothbrok standing after he found the golden land and established the Viking Colony Ragnar always hoped for.

However, while living with his brothers, Ubbe more than proved himself as a great warrior. He won the two battles with his brothers while avenging Ragnar’s death. He then fought alongside Ivar and Hvitserk to defeat the Saxons and take over York before trapping Aethelwulf and defeating him.

His alliance with Lagertha to keep Kattegat out of Ivar’s hands was well thought through as they won the first battle but Rollo’s reinforcements helped Ivar defeat them in the second one. Ubbe still had the last laugh as he was part of the alliance that toppled Ivar.

During his time in Wessex, Ubbe also established himself as a warrior, helping Alfred to defeat king Harald and Jarl Olavson. After that, he became a diplomat and preferred winning by establishing peace rather than through the mass killing his brothers enjoyed. He still trained Alfred and his army to be able to defeat future Viking invasions and secured the land in East Anglia which became his greatest win in England.

3 Ivar

Although Hvitserk fought in all of Ivar’s battles except the one he lost to Bjorn, Ivar was always in charge which is why he receives more credit than Hvitserk. Ivar believed that Ragnar had made him his official heir when he took him to England, which is why he opposed Bjorn with so much ferocity. By the time he went to battle, Bjorn had already proved himself multiple times on the battlefield alongside Ragnar and Rollo, so there was no way Ivar could match that.

Ivar was still the best military strategist among Ragnar’s sons since his ideas always changed the direction of the battle. He was invaluable in the two battles that avenged Ragnar’s death before proceeding attack and secure York with Ubbe and Hvitserk’s help. In York, Ivar was willing to do anything to win including hiding his entire army in the sewers. He managed to outwit Aethelwulf in two separate battles after Bjorn left, which earned him the confidence of the Great Heathen Army.

During the first battle of Kattegat, Ivar realized that his allies were losing and refused to help as Harald and Hvitserk were heavily defeated by Ubbe, Bjorn, and Lagertha’s forces. He managed to convince Rollo to support him which saw him get the reinforcements he needed to win the second battle of Kattegat and become king.

Ivar’s strategies also helped the Rus win the first battle capturing King Olaf and Harald in the process but that marked the end of his winning days. He never planned for Bjorn’s final miraculous appearance on the battlefield that saw the Rus army scatter. Alfred’s army charged by the message of Christ being on the battlefield also turned the tide on Ivar’s army in Wessex although he was winning initially.

2 Hvitserk

Hvitserk didn’t enjoy leading but, but his ability to fight was never in question. His victories largely depended on the person he chose to follow into battle though which is why he was the least famous of Ragnar’s four surviving sons after Sigurd died. He still won one battle more than Ivar because he continually switched to the winning side. He first tasted battle in Frankia while accompanying his father but Ragnar lost the battle to Rollo and so Hvitserk was on the losing team even before he could lift a sword.

When he went to England with the Great Heathen Army, Hvitserk took part in all the battles that the sons of Ragnar won. He fought bravely in both the attack on Northumbria and the one on Wessex. He also fought with Ubbe and Ivar against Aethelwulf. His decision to stay and fight with Ivar saw him win two more battles against the Saxons and also the second battle for Kattegat giving him an upper hand over Ubbe.

His life took a turn for the worst when he witnessed the brutality of Ivar’s rule though. He became part of the alliance that finally toppled Ivar from the throne of Kattegat making it the one extra win he has over Ivar. He also fought alongside Ivar for the Rus and won one more battle before partaking in both of Ivar’s lost battles afterward.

1 Bjorn

Bjorn Ironside tasted battle long before any of his brothers could fight. He won his first battle with Ragnar and Lagertha against Jarl Borg. When he accompanied Ragnar to England, he fought alongside the heroes and came out of the battle without a scratch which is why Ragnar named him Bjorn Ironside. He then became Ragnar’s right-hand man helping him break the blockade in Frankia.

By the time the brothers came to England to avenge Ragnar, Bjorn had won three battles and he was already famous. He led the brothers wisely as they won the battles against Northumbria and Wessex. He had learned to fight the old way, laying conventional winning strategies and fighting honorably. Ivar could never match that. His plans were working in the battles of Kattegat, but he didn’t plan for Rollo’s reinforcements and so he lost to Ivar in the second battle.

In Wessex, Bjorn helped Alfred’s forces defeat the combined forces of Olavson and King Harald which won him Gunhild’s heart. He then came back to Kattegat to win the battle that mattered most. Ivar was hated by his people, and Bjorn didn’t want to shed any more blood than was necessary so he convinced the people to support his alliance against Ivar, and that saw him defeat his little brother. He didn’t finish off Ivar though. However, in his very last battle, Bjorn made the ultimate sacrifice to save Kattegat and all of Norway and that was the final blow that Ivar never recovered from.
