History’s Vikings is a magnificent show about the lives and conquests of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. They lived in Kattegat, a small village that had turned into a powerful trading post since season 1 when Ragnar first put it on the international map. In the world of Vikings, progress typically came through war and fighting. Each season featured several battles, and some were incredibly glorious to fight.
It didn’t take much for Vikings to start quarreling with someone. In the span of six seasons, they fought foreign forces as well as each other. They were the strongest when they put their differences aside, as they did in wake of Ragnar’s death. Unfortunately, they also had to fight their own family members from time to time, which made certain fights especially emotionally taxing.
9 Season 1: “A King’s Ranson”
Ragnar, Rollo, Floki, and the rest of the Vikings sailed to England to plunder new lands. The greatest fight scene of season 1 happened in “A King’s Ranson” after Rollo was baptized and the Vikings fought King Aelle’s forces. The king failed to deliver the Vikings the promised gold, which resulted in Aethelwulf’s death.
The fight was shot incredibly well and it poignantly depicted just how cruel the Viking warriors were. Even though they were clearly victorious, Rollo continued to mete out violence, just to send Floki a message.
8 Season 2: Ragnar VS Jarl Borg
In season 2, Jarl Borg usurped Kattegat, so Ragnar, Rollo, Lagertha, Floki, and even young Björn had no choice but to fight him. In “Answers in Blood”, Ragnar’s best personality traits truly shone through. Cunning and calculating as he was, he lured Borg in the middle of the field by ruining his grain.
It was a tense scene as there was no way of telling which Viking clan would win. After all, they were all equally ferocious fighters. While fighting, Ragnar saved Björn’s life. In a very poignant quote, Ragnar told him, “You have a lot to learn.”
7 Season 3: Siege Of Paris
Siege of Paris is undoubtedly the best battle in Vikings. It stretched from episode 8 to episode 10. After all, Paris was fortified and the Norsemen didn’t have the necessary technology to breach the walls without considerable effort. Luckily for them, Floki invented some new siege weapons for the occasion.
Siege of Paris had it all: an insight into the Viking culture, close-up scenes of the carnage, shocking plot twists, and Ragnar’s genius military strategy put into action.
6 Season 4 (I): Ragnar Faces Rollo
One of the many things that make no sense about Rollo is his decision to betray his men just because he was sick and tired of living in Ragnar’s shadow. In season 4’s “The Last Ship,” the two brothers fight on opposing sides. As their ships approached, the tension became almost unbearable.
Ragnar greeted Rollo by telling him that he was never his brother. The two brothers then faced off, but they didn’t have it in them to kill one another. Both left the battle feeling defeated.
5 Season 4 (II): The Sons Of Ragnar Take Revenge On Aelle
After Ragnar’s death, Vikings was never the same. In the second part of season 2, the sons of Ragnar sailed to England to seek revenge for their father’s death. The so-called “great heathen army” faced King Aelle’s army and sent chills down his spine.
In the beginning of Vikings, the Viking troops were much smaller in size and disorganized. In “Revenge”, they stood in formation and showed up in numbers that King Aelle didn’t anticipate.
4 Season 5 (I): The Battle Of York
In season 5, Ivar took over as the Vikings resident strategist. In “Homeland,” the Vikings fought the battle of York and Ivar had his people hide in the city’s sewers.
It’s not just Ivar’s iconic “I am Ivar the Boneless” scene that makes this battle the best of the season; it’s the unique circumstances the Vikings fought in. The rain was falling and they fought in a city rather than in an open field.
3 Season 5 (II): “Ragnarok”
By the end of season 5, the main themes in the Vikings started repeating themselves. Just as Ragnar didn’t get along with Rollo, so did Björn find himself in a war with Ivar. Their rivalry reached new highs in season 5.
In “Ragnarok”, the brothers faced each other in Kattegat. If it wasn’t for Freydis betraying Ivar and letting Björn’s forces in, Ironside probably wouldn’t have won this suspenseful battle.
2 Season 6 (I): “Death and the Serpent”
The first association fans have when they think of the sixth episode of season 6, “Death and the Serpent,” is Lagertha dying. Since she was a main character, the preceding battle fades in comparison to the scene in which Hvitserk accidentally kills her. That’s not to say that the fight itself was bad, though. Quite on the contrary: it was the best from season 6A.
Lagertha was trying to fend off the bandits who attacked her village, so the members of the community strategized and built a trap should they attack them again. And attack they did. Lagertha faced White Hair in one of the show’s best one-on-one fights and managed to kill him right after it seemed her fate was sealed for good.
1 Season 6b (II): Alfred Faces Ivar
In “The Lord Giveth”, King Alfred had to face Ivar’s forces. The Boneless had a plan: he wanted to set the Saxon army back by forcing two-thirds of the army to help the ”crippled” third that encountered metal traps in the foggy forest.
As always, everything went according to Ivar’s plan. One of the battle’s most memorable moments was definitely Harald’s unexpected death.
