Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

The show Vikings had many heroes and villains but they were not presented in black and white as everyone fought for what suited them at the moment. Ubbe is the only person that came close enough to being the hero of the hit show. He wasn’t the best fighter nor the best politician, but he was a good leader and the most compassionate of Ragnar’s sons.

He was born into a messy world with lots of fighting and blood around him but he managed to keep a straight mind through it all. He wasn’t exactly a saint, but he managed to keep his humanity throughout the six seasons of Vikings. Ubbe surviving all the adventures in Vikings was a miracle to most fans but it all comes down to his traits.

10 Best: Compassionate

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Unlike the rest of Ragnar’s children, Ubbe couldn’t stand and watch someone suffering unnecessarily. He often chose to treat those around him humanely, even when others around him would have treated them otherwise.

He was unable to stand and watch as his brothers sacrificed two Saxon boys before attacking York in the fifth season, and did his best to help those who seemed in need of it. He was the most humane of Ragnar’s children.

9 Worst: Not A Great Leader

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

When Bjorn left for the Mediterranean, Ubbe was in charge of the Great Army, all he had to do was keep Ivar in check. Ivar was a difficult man to control, but Ubbe was his elder brother which gave him some measure of power.

But instead of fighting for his place, Ubbe lost his birthright to Ivar. Then came his expedition to Greenland which turned bloody because he was unable to keep his subjects in check.

8 Best: Loyal

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Loyalty was one of the most elusive traits in the characters of Vikings. Everyone switched sides when it suited them and didn’t seem to care much for family and the common good. Ubbe, on the other hand, remained loyal to all members of Ragnar’s family protecting them no matter how messed up they were.

After falling out with Ivar, Margrethe tried to get him to turn on his family and become the king of Kattegat but he chose to keep his promise to Lagertha and keep the peace. Ubbe also kept his promise to Alfred despite having the option of switching sides and probably becoming the first Viking king in England.

7 Worst: Short-Sighted

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Ubbe joined the losing side and paid a huge price for it. Bjorn was Ragnar’s eldest son and thus the right person to lead Ragnar’s sons to the victory they expected. When Bjorn decided to follow his own path, it was Ubbe’s turn to forge a path for his little brothers. Ubbe was, however, confused and unable to plan for his own future, leave alone that of everyone else.

He ended up fighting for Ivar and later for Lagertha, both of which didn’t help him. He wasn’t sure where he wanted to call home, whom he wanted to spend his life with, and worst of all, how he would achieve his father’s dream. He often became a victim of other people’s mistakes.

6 Best: A Peacemaker

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Ragnar always wanted land with rich soils where his people could settle and farm in peace. The dream was elusive as his people seemed to enjoy war and bloodshed rather than peace wherever they went. Ubbe had his father’s dream though. If Ubbe was in charge, peace and harmony wouldn’t have been so elusive.

He was a brave man and a good fighter but he never took part in senseless killings. He always chose the path that would lead to peace which is why he decided to fight alongside Lagertha and Bjorn rather than the bloodthirsty Ivar. He even chose to be baptized and make peace with Alfred so that future Viking settlers would have a home in England.

5 Worst: Too Sentimental

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Ubbe had the best of intentions for everyone but that is all they were; Intentions! He really cared about protecting Ragnar’s legacy and keeping the family together but he forgot his responsibility to the people of Kattegat. As Ragnar’s eldest son by Aslaug, Ubbe was the second in line to ruling Kateggat after Bjorn, but he never really fought for his place.

He chose to enjoy the good times and the short-lived peace with Margrethe, and later Torvi, instead of really fighting to save Kattegat and defeat Ivar. He was only hoping that somehow Ivar would regain his senses and Ragnar’s family would be restored to its former glory by a miracle, which would never happen.

4 Best: Good-Hearted

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Slavery would never have survived in Ubbe’s Kattegat because he couldn’t stand to watch someone being dehumanized. He is the only person that treated slaves as equals in the villages and even freed one and made her his wife. As far as he was concerned, it was normal to treat everyone as an equal no matter who they were.

Ubbe cared more about everyone else than himself and tried his best to ensure that no one’s rights were trampled on. He even saved Hvitserk after he had made so many mistakes and caused him so much pain.

3 Worst: Unreliable

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Ubbe accomplished almost everything Ragnar failed at but also managed to avoid all the mistakes Ragnar committed. That doesn’t mean he was perfect though, Ubbe’s accomplishments were always half-completed. He managed to make a peace with the King of England but left before he could secure the future of the settlers.

He was also a good fighter but he hated going to battle, sometimes even for the right cause. He was also a great diplomat but never used his skills when they were really needed in Greenland. He discovered a new land, which he also abandoned to a maniac. In the end, he achieved so much but you couldn’t rely on him to keep any of his winnings.

2 Best: Selfless

Vikings Ubbes Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Ubbe just didn’t care about what happened to him. He was undecided about his purpose in life but always wanted the best for those around him. He stood up for the slaves while everyone mistreated them.

When they moved to England, he was the only one willing to be baptized so everyone could live in peace. He also gave up his claim for Kattegat preferring to fight for the best of his brothers although that ended badly. He never fought for himself as much as he did for everyone else.

1 Worst: Easily Compromising

Ubbe was a better diplomat than Ragnar but always put too much at stake for seemingly very little reward. His mistakes started when he lost his leadership of the great army after exposing his weakness to both Aethelwulf and Ivar. He then forgave Ivar and Hvitserk while they continued to taint Ragnar’s legacy.

He was willing to lose to Frodo, a weak and insolent king he could have defeated by simply turning the rest of the Viking army against. Ubbe even gave up Greenland, the first great victory he had had in a long time. While he won in the end, he gave up too many of the victories of his life for little to nothing in return.
