Vikings: What Your Favorite Character Says About You

From the Sons of Ragnar to Torvi, Harald, and Floki, what does your favorite Viking character mean?

Vikings is a show with an absolutely massive number of main characters, especially as the series takes place over decades – characters are born, grow up, and die as adults, while others move on to other parts of the world, settle other countries, or simply fade out into obscurity. As such, it’s hard to have a single favorite that spans the entire six seasons, unless that favorite happens to be Bjorn, Floki, or Lagertha.

Even the longest-running characters change massively over the course of the show, with someone like Ivar going from a helpless child to a sympathetic young man, to a terrifying villain, and then to something closer to a father-figure and a loving brother. With such incredible development, a favorite character in one season may be totally different to the favorite character of the next. However it is defined, though, who someone calls ‘favorite’ may say more about them than they think…

10 Athelstan – Adaptable

Athelstan is one of the first truly main (heroic) characters to die, as he is killed in season 3 by Floki. Becuase of this, still claiming him as their favorite character may say more about the point at which a fan stopped watching the show than anything! Beyond that, though, Athelstan was always a character who was incredibly adaptable, able to become Viking when kidnapped by Ragnar, to learn new languages, to make new allies, and to find joy in new situations. His fans, therefore, are likely as adaptable as he is, always looking for ways to find peace and happiness wherever they are.

9 King Harald – Ambitious

King Harald Finehair is a surprisingly sad character, who ends up losing almost everything to his ambition, and dying alone on the battlefield. His ambition drives him from the start, when he is introduced as the man who wishes to become King of Norway, and it’s this ambition that causes many of his worst decisions, and eventually sets him against his beloved brother. However it may not work out for him, though, fans of Harald are likely to sympathize with the ambition – and have plenty of their own.

8 Hvitserk – Seeker

Hvitserk also has a somewhat tragic story, as he struggles to find his place within his brothers, to decide if he should fight Ivar or not, and to find his faith. He also struggles with drink and hallucinogens after he loses the woman he loves, and then with guilt after he kills Lagertha in a stupor, thinking she is Ivar.

At the end of the day, though, Hvitserk isn’t defined by his tragedy, but by his desire to understand. He is constantly in search of understanding, something that his fans will relate to.

7 Torvi – Loving

Torvi is a character that moves from being a quasi-villain in the early seasons to a fan-favorite in the final ones, and while she is an incredible Viking warrior and a talented fighter, she is much more defined by love. The love of those close to her, and of her children, but also love of herself, as she fights to reclaim her place as a warrior as well as a wife. She is constantly empathetic and a great protector, and the one to first reach out to make peace with the Indigenous people when she and Ubbe reach North America. Those who claim Torvi as a favorite are sure to be loving as well.

6 Ubbe – Reasonable

Of all the Sons of Ragnar, Ubbe may be the most practical and reasonable. He wants to explore, and of course he wants to fight, but he is also usually the voice of reason among his brothers and his people, and often the peacemaker in tense situations. This will definitely be mirrored in fans of his, those people who also see themselves as mediators and the ones who can take charge in order to ensure that things are taken care of on a practical level.

5 Ivar The Boneless – Analytical

In later seasons of the show, Ivar is portrayed as a villain, killing his own brothers, invading his own home with the Rus, and spreading terror wherever he goes. However, fans of Ivar the Boneless do not love him for being a vicious fighter, but for his brilliantly tactical mind, his ability to manipulate, and his way to play any game to his own advantage. Ivar fans are also likely to be people who think of themselves as underestimated, even if they may not get revenge on their doubters in quite the same bloodthirsty was that he does.

4 Bjorn Ironside – Driven

Bjorn Ironside is a lot of things – he is an adventurer, and explorer, a warrior, a passionate man, and a powerful leader. However, fans of Bjorn may connect with all of these or any of them, but all are likely to be driven.

Everything that Bjorn does, from his childhood to his death, is done with a powerful certainty, and a willingness to see it through to the end (except, perhaps, his romantic relationships). He knows what he wants, and is always ready to do what it takes to get it, but without sacrificing others along the way – an admirable trait, to be sure.

3 Floki – Curious

Floki is a fascinating character, who refers to himself as ‘crazy’, and who seems to have a unique connection to the gods. He is definitely the quirkiest, in a world where everyone is a powerful fighter or manipulator, Floki is loyal but truly follows the beat of his own drum. Floki fans are also likely to be quirky and independent, but more than that, to be curious. Floki is, in all things, driven by a curious mind – a desire to build, explore, and to understand.

2 Lagertha – Independent

Lagertha is a fan-favorite character, and it is easy to see why. From the first episodes, she is powerfully independent, a shieldmaiden who becomes a warrior and ruler in her own right. She isn’t perfect, of course, but she is a devoted defender of her home and family, a capable leader, and above all, independent. She has no problems leaving everything behind rather than sacrificing her morals or standards for herself, and will kill anyone who tries to trap her or abuse her.

1 Ragnar Lothbrok – Authentic

Ragnar Lothbrok is ostensibly the central character of Vikings (although some may argue that Lagertha or Bjorn would take that title), so it’s difficult to pin down a single trait that his fans would be most likely to admire and emulate. Ragnar is complex – incredibly intelligent, both hot tempered and able to play the long game, a gleeful warrior and a true explorer, a powerful leader and king, a seeker of truth in faith, and so much more.

However, no matter his conflicts and confusions, he is authentic. Ragnar is honest and straightforward about who he is, and while he may occasionally dissemble in order to manipulate, even then he tends to tell the truth about his tendency to do that! (His relationship with King Ecbert reveals this time and time again). Like Ragnar, his fans are likely to be those people who have no patience with fakery or falseness, and are always unapologetically themselves.
