Vikings may be a series about raiding, battling, and wars for the rulership of Norway (and well beyond those shores), but it is also a series about love and romance. From the first season, when Ragnar and Lagertha’s relationship is central, and Ragnar’s affair with Aslaug changes everything, the relationships in the show often drive the plot. Athelstan’s affair with Judith brings Alfred into the world and even changes the line of succession, thanks to King Ecbert’s love of Athelstan. Ivar’s failure to have sex with Margrethe leads to Sigurd’s death, when he makes fun of his brother for it.

Large or small, love and relationships drive the show, and the movements of the characters – much like in real life, where relationships and romance can change the course of anyone’s life (although usually with less deadly or historically momentous results). But who among the Sons of Ragnar would be the best to get into a relationship with, and which would be a terrible idea to date?

5 Ivar

Ivar, despite being a clear villain for much of the final seasons, actually does have some strong suits when it comes to relationships. He is possibly the most intelligent of his brothers, and is incredibly passionate and has a brilliantly creative mind (although this manifests in the series as the way that he manages to win battles, destroy armies, and generally kill a huge number of people). During his time with the Rus, fans also get to see Ivar’s softer side, and that he has the potential to be a wonderful father figure, as he is to the young Prince.

However, there’s simply no getting past the fact that Ivar is vicious, cruel, arrogant, and violent. When he has his first sexual experience (with Margrethe), and is physically unable, he nearly kills her on the spot – and throughout the series, it is obvious that Ivar is a terrifyingly capable killer. He later does kill his wife, Freydis, for lying to him, and the only partner that he has anything even approaching a positive relationship with is Katia.

4 Sigurd

Sigurd isn’t really around for long enough for fans to get a solid impression of how he would act as a romantic partner – although it’s easy to assume that he would be a better option than Ivar, purely on the basis that he doesn’t murder his lovers or declare himself a god. He also does show some care and compassion as a child, when he seems to be the only one in Kattegat who cares about the wellbeing of Siggy at all (although not enough to keep her safe from accidental drowning). However, he also shows himself to be impulsive and a bully when he insults Ivar in front of everyone (although being killed for it is a bit of an overreaction). Finally, he proves that he cannot be trusted, as Margrethe begged him not to tell anyone what she said about Ivar, and he announced it in front of the entire army. Impulsive, bullying, mean, and untrustworthy are certainly not positive traits for a romantic partner.

3 Hvitserk

Hvitserk spends most of the series struggling to find his place in the world – and it’s highly possible that, had the woman he loved not been killed, he could have settled into a sense of home and self that would have made him a good man. Unfortunately, Ivar derailed this possibility, burning Hvitserk’s lover alive. After finding out about her death, Hvitserk was unable to cope, and started to abuse alcohol and drugs, to the point that he was consistently hallucinating and barely able to function.

While his brothers attempt to give him opportunities to make something of himself, he consistently lets them down, and takes a long time to find his way back to a healthy place – and even then, he is constantly struggling to figure out who he is, and what his purpose is. In the end, Hvitserk is seen to be settling in Wessex, and getting baptized – so if he eventually decided that this was his place, he has the potential to become a good partner. For most of the series, though, he is simply too lost in grief for Thora.

2 Bjorn

Vikings Which Son Of Ragnar Would Make The Best Potential Partner Ranked

Bjorn is a fan-favorite character, and a man who manages to marry multiple women over the course of the series – so it’s clear that he is extremely attractive as a romantic partner… although he may struggle with commitment, as he often becomes bored with his wives. Despite his issues with commitment, though, Bjorn would make a wonderful partner (for however long he maintained interest in the relationship). He is always respectful of his partners, and even though he wishes to move on, he doesn’t cheat (and most of his relationships that would otherwise seem to be cheating happen with the full consent of everyone involved). He is also a fantastic warrior, intelligent, curious, and caring, and while he may have a touch of arrogance about him, it’s probably well-deserved, given that he is a living legend in his own world.

1 Ubbe

Ubbe is definitely the best potential romantic partner of all the Sons of Ragnar. He is a powerful warrior, but unlike some of his brothers, he is not interested in making war for the sake of it. He cares about taking revenge or lands, but then he is the one who most wants to settle the land, to forge alliances, and to create communities. He is intelligent enough to rule, and pragmatic enough to be able to put aside his own grudges in favor of what is best for everyone (and is one of the only ones of Aslaug’s sons who forgives Lagertha for killing her, and makes his own alliance with her). He is flexible, becoming a Christian when it seems necessary in order to make an alliance and protect himself and his partner, and he is a good father – even to Torvi’s children with Bjorn. He may not have the kind of legendary status that Bjorn does, or the ambitions of Ivar, but in terms of being a respectful partner who is caring and reasonable, Ubbe is the clear winner.
