Lagertha, the mother of Bjorn Ironside, was a complex, flawed woman who has done a number of heroic things as well as some mistakes in her life. Already in season 1 of Vikings, it became clear that she will be central to the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his many sons. All she ever wanted was to live in peace on a farm with her husband, but the gods had a bigger plan in store for her.

Lagertha rose to be a leader of her people, strong, loyal, and independent. She was fearless in battle and calculating in love. As years passed by, she grew even more cunning and wiser than Ragnar, stealing his spotlight and basking in her own glory.

Lagertha was loving and fair, but that didn’t mean she was soft and lenient. She was a multi-layered character and one of the strongest female leads in all of TV history.

While it’s true that Ragnar led his people to new lands, his character was nowhere nearly as strong as Lagertha’s. He struggled with addiction, he was disloyal, and he turned his back to his friends. Unlike his, Lagertha’s ambitions were always good. In that regard, she cannot be compared to any other character in the series.

9 She Raised Bjorn, Ragnar’s Greatest Son

Ragnar doesn’t really deserve much credit when it comes to child-rearing, especially once Bjorn became a teenager. In the first episode of the Vikings, he is still a good father, but he started lusting after Aslaug shortly after.

Lagertha does deserve the credit, though. She raised Bjorn to be a fierce warrior and a responsible ruler. Bjorn respected Lagertha even more than he respected his father.

8 Lagertha Cared About The Viking Culture

The first season of Vikings introduced various aspects of the Viking culture, including human sacrifice. Later on, it was mostly about politics and intimate relationships.

Aslaug was a bit of a mystic, but so was Lagertha. In “Baldur”, she revisited Ragnar’s death. She performed all kinds of rituals and sought wisdom from the Seer. If it wasn’t for Lagertha, much of the show’s initial charm would be lost.

7 Her Kill Count Matters

In the world of the blood-thirsty Vikings, one could argue that the higher the kill count, the more important the character. Lagertha was a cold-blooded killer when necessary, and she murdered many important men along the way.

She stabbed her second husband Earl Sigvard in the eye and secured her own future as an earl. She told Kalf she would kill him and kept her promise. And let’s not forget how she took out her attackers in season 1 and owned up to it.

6 She Was A Great Ruler

Lagertha always has her people’s best interests at heart, unlike Ragnar who killed his men in their sleep in his final days. When she was in Wessex, King Ecbert gave her fertile land so the Vikings could settle down there.

She led her colony with a firm, loving hand, and she cared more about her people than she did about power or glory.

5 She Is The Reasons The Sons Were Divided

In season 4, Lagertha finally killed Aslaug. Most fans were not too broken up about it, since Ragnar’s second wife was one of the most unlikable characters on the show. Aslaug technically asked Lagertha to kill her and send her to Valhalla, but that didn’t mean that Ivar would let Lagertha get away with murdering his mother.

When Hvitserk killed Lagertha in one of the most brutal kills in the show, the differences between the sons grew even starker. Lagertha set in motion a lot of events that were playing out even after her death.

4 She Was Around Longer Than Ragnar

Ragnar plotted his own death and died in season 4. Even though he was the show’s favorite character, the show was better off without him in many instances. Lagertha was around for much longer than Ragnar, she didn’t die season 6.

In the beginning of season 6, she decided she doesn’t want to fight any more wars. She just wanted to live on a farm and hang out with ghosts there. By the end of his life, Ragnar was a broken man, but Lagertha went out like the hero that she was.

3 She Cared About Kattegat

Lagertha cared about Kattegat, the cradle of her people, more than anybody else in the series. She left it after Ragnar brought pregnant Aslaug back with him, but took it back in the Conquest of Kattegat.

While the battle wasn’t one of the greatest in the series, it helped establish Lagertha as a character of great importance. She fought her own fights without the help of any men.

2 The Impact Of Her Death

When Lagertha died and it was time to say goodbye to her, the series delivered one of the most emotional sequences in the history of the show.

As Torvi sang and the Norsemen pulled the burning ship into the water, Lagertha was seen to lay to rest next to Ragnar, signaling for the last time that these two really were perfect for each other.

1 She Was The Greatest Shield-Maiden Of All Time

While there were a lot of exceptional male warriors on the show, Lagertha was unique in her status as the best shield-maiden in the world. No other woman came close to being as ferocious, brave, and skilled as Lagertha.

In the world of the Vikings, men and women were equal. As the show progressed, it became increasingly male-centric, and women were often reduced to their looks. But as long as Lagertha was around, the show didn’t lose its egalitarian edge.
