Vikings Why Torstein Was Killed Off

Torstein was one of Ragnar Lothbrok’s closest and most loyal friends, and fans were sad to see him go in season 3 of Vikings. Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings debuted on History Channel in 2013. Though it was originally planned as a miniseries, Vikings was quickly renewed for a second season, and is now enjoying its sixth and final season.

Vikings initially followed the journeys of legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his Viking brothers, among those Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Torstein (Jefferson Hall). The series gradually shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own travels, becoming the main protagonists of the series, especially after Ragnar’s death in season 4. But before Ragnar ascended to Valhalla, he saw some of his closest friends die, such as Athelstan and Torstein.

Vikings has seen the demise of many characters, some in heroic ways, and others in truly cruel situations. Torstein died in season 3, and though his death wasn’t as bloody or cruel as others, it was still a heartbreaking moment.

Why Torstein Was Killed Off In Season 3

Torstein was presumed dead when in season 2’s finale Floki poisoned him with mushrooms, but it turned out that these only made him appear dead, and he was revealed to be alive later on in the episode (while also showing that Floki never betrayed Ragnar). Torstein continued to fight alongside Ragnar, and during an attack on King Brihtwulf’s forces, he was struck by an arrow on his left arm. Though he took out the arrow, the wound got infected and he asked Floki to amputate his arm. In the episode “Warrior’s Fate”, the Vikings climbed the mountain to fight Burgred’s armies. Björn scouted ahead but couldn’t see any Mercian forces, but Ragnar was aware of their presence. Torstein, who was very weak by then, volunteered to go first and was attacked by Burgred’s soldiers, who launched arrows at him. Kneeling on the ground, Torstein muttered “Odin, I come to you” and managed to kill a soldier with one of the arrows stuck in his leg before being killed by the other soldiers. After the battle, Floki blamed Ragnar for Torstein’s death.

Unlike other Vikings characters like Siggy, who was killed off for behind-the-scenes reasons, or the Seer, who died in order to prove how far Ivar’s cruelty and ego can go, there wasn’t a proper reason for Torstein’s death, other than – as Ragnar said – the fact that everyone is fated to die on a certain day. Torstein earned his place in Valhalla not only for dying in battle but for sacrificing himself to give his Viking brothers the best possible chance at winning, and for being one of the most loyal friends Ragnar ever had.
