Walkers New Partner Is The Reboots Real Texas Ranger Replacement

Turns out the new CW Walker does have a character in its midst who comes close to paying homage to the original show’s Texas Ranger lead. Like the original, this person has a military background, is proficient in martial arts, operates with a distinctive code of justice, and is proud of their native heritage. In the case of the new show, however, that person isn’t the title character of Cordell Walker — it’s his brand-new partner and new Ranger Micki Ramirez (Lindsey Morgan).

The qualities of Chuck Norris’s Cordell Walker were a significant part of Walker, Texas Ranger’s original appeal. While he was known for being a rough, tough lawman who always got his man, he also touched viewers with his commitment to the law, maintaining his connection to his Native American heritage and being there for his friends. He trusted his instincts and often relied on his fighting skills to find justice.

Much like the original Texas Ranger, Micki Ramirez is a bit of a lone wolf. With strained family connections, she has had to make her way alone, a path she appears to like. Micki’s proud of being one of the few female Mexican American Texas Rangers and is aware of the responsibility that brings. She isn’t going to let a little thing like being partnered with former Supernatural star, Jared Padalecki’s loose cannon Cordell Walker mess up her career. She has fought her way into being a Ranger, burning bridges with her disapproving family, and proving her worth repeatedly in the Army, as a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper and now as a Ranger. She does things by the book but adheres to her own code of justice.

Growing up as she did, Micki Ramirez learned at an early age that the person she can rely on most is herself, in a way she’s very much the Lone Wolf of the CW Walker. Raised in a home where her mother mistrusted authority, especially law enforcement, she followed the path she believed was right. In season 1 episode 3, “Bobble Head,” Lindsey Morgan’s Micki admitted to Padalecki’s Walker in a rare moment of vulnerability that she got into some “crazy teenage trouble” with her friend, Garrison Murphy. Her friend didn’t make it out, but she did. Micki didn’t take that for granted, embracing the disciplined way of life the military and law enforcement, as well as martial arts training, taught her. Micki is used to being alone, hence her uncertainty about her military medic boyfriend being a more regular presence in her life.

Micki’s respect for her badge and fellow law enforcement officers is shown in the way she treats the drunken Walker, driving him home the first night they met in the CW Walker pilot. Even though Walker is the senior Ranger, she’s the one showing him a different kind of law enforcement. With a reputation of being a by-the-book officer, Micki surmised they partnered her with Walker to balance out his rule-breaking. She has a sharp eye and a keen instinct in reading people, evidenced by how she effortlessly read Walker’s friend Hoyt in “Bubble Head,” and used that to her advantage in closing their case. She shows Walker that sometimes people, even him, need tough love to be helped, but she did it all within the law.

Ranger Micki Ramirez is the thread to the original Walker, Texas Ranger that is keeping the new CW Walker somewhat grounded. She’s the type of ranger fans of the original Texas Ranger program admired and looked up to. That tie is a major plus for the show. She and the new loose cannon version of Cordell Walker get to know one another better they will evolve into a true partnership, one of mutual respect and trust, one befitting of a Texas Ranger.
