Walking Dead Who Princess Is (& What She Means For Season 11)

Warning: SPOILERS for The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15, “The Tower”.

The Walking Dead has introduced Princess (Paola Lazaro), but who is this character in the comics, and what does she mean for season 11 of the AMC series? Princess appeared in the tail end of The Walking Dead season 10, episode 14, but had a much more prominent role in the show’s latest episode, The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15, “The Tower”.

After an encounter that nearly went terribly wrong, Princess joined the fold when she crossed paths with Eugene (Josh McDermitt), King Ezekiel (Khary Payton), and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), who are on a mission to meet with Stephanie, the mysterious voice on the radio and the woman who has been in contact with Eugene. Following the fall of the Hilltop at the hands of Alpha (Samantha Morton) and the Whisperers, Rosita (Christian Serratos) urged Eugene to use his prearranged meeting with Stephanie to see if they could procure help from this new community. Eugene, Yumiko, and Ezekiel were sidetracked by Princess in The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15, but their mission to reach the rendezvous point has since resumed.

The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15 provided a proper introduction to Princess, but viewers likely would have learned even more about her next week if it wasn’t for the coronavirus pandemic, which has derailed AMC’s plans for The Walking Dead universe by forcing them to end season 10 one episode early. Due to this issue, The Walking Dead season 10 finale has been delayed indefinitely. Now, it has no set air date but is confirmed to be released sometime in 2020 as a standalone episode. In any case, The Walking Dead has just introduced another important character from the comics who may be important to the story for season 11. Here’s what you need to know about Princess and what she means for the show’s future.

Who The Walking Dead’s Princess Is

Walking Dead Who Princess Is (& What She Means For Season 11)

In The Walking Dead season 10, episode 14, Eugene, Yumiko, and Ezekiel found several zombies tied up and dressed in strange costumes shortly before running into Princess, a woman wearing a pink coat and totting a light machine gun. It’s confirmed in The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15 that the zombies they found were set up that way by Princess, who did it to entertain herself. Apparently, Princess has been alone for a long time. Princess, a talkative person full of energy and enthusiasm, has been on her own for quite so some time, so she was quite excited to run across other survivors. Princess, who’s perhaps a bit too eager to help, incidentally causes problems for Eugene and the others when she scares off their horses by shooting her gun at nearby zombies.

Princess promises to give them transportation, and after leading them through a minefield, she stalls by leading them in circles. This is because Princess, at heart, is a lonely character, and that’s something that started even before the outbreak. According to Princess, she’s always been an outsider who has difficulties making friends. This was demonstrated when she explains that someone called her “hard to love”. Eugene, who has struggled with some of the same problems, is quick to sympathize with her. And by the end of the episode, all three have warmed up to her. It would seem that Princess has become the newest member of the group.

Princess’ Role In The Walking Dead Comics

Walking Dead Who Princess Is (& What She Means For Season 11)

In the Walking Dead comics, “Princess” is a nickname used by a character named Juanita Sanchez. Introduced in Walking Dead #171, Princess meets up with the survivors in a way that’s similar to how she gets involved in the story in the TV version. Alone in Pittsburgh, Princess meets a group that consists of Michonne, Eugene, Siddiq, Yumiko, and Magna. She tries to go with them, but at first, they’re reluctant to accept her company. But in the end, she’s allowed to travel with them. She brings with her a spear, which was actually referenced in The Walking Dead season 10, episode 15.

After they reach their destination, they meet the Commonwealth. Princess stays with them through this experience, and remains a member of the group once they return to Alexandria. During this time, Princess cultivates friendships with many of the core characters and forms a romantic relationship with Mercer, a character associated with the Commonwealth. Since Princess doesn’t join until the comic only had twenty issues left, Princess is only important in the Commonwealth arc and has only a limited number of appearances. Even so, after joining up with Rick’s people, she stays with them until the end.

Princess (& The Commonwealth) In The Walking Dead Season 11

What does The Walking Dead have planned for this new character, and what does her inclusion mean for season 11? The show made a clear move toward introducing the Commonwealth when Eugene first made contact with Stephanie, and Princess joining the show is just another step in that direction. Princess is around when the comic characters meet the Commonwealth, and it would that the same will be true of her TV counterpart. Based on what happens in episode 15, it’s apparent that Princess will indeed be on-hand when Eugene finally comes face-to-face with Stephanie, who may possibly be joined by other representatives of her community. Since The Walking Dead has already killed off Alpha, it seems like a strong possibility that the show will put the Whisperers behind them completely after they deal with Beta (Ryan Hurst) in the season 10 finale. Once this happens, The Walking Dead can move on and dive deep into the Commonwealth arc from the comic books. In the comics, the Commonwealth is the last major story told by the series before its conclusion.

With the Hilltop gone and Alexandria in dire straits, the survivors may have no choice but to turn to the Commonwealth, who can help them pick themselves back up again. In the comics, this large network of settlements brings Rick and his people into a much larger world. Gradually, The Walking Dead has expanded its world, by having a small group of survivors led by just one man grow until the series focused on not one, but three different communities, each with their own leader. Through the Commonwealth, the world of The Walking Dead will expand even further, as will its cast, since Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is coming back, and Princess may become a main character in season 11.
