WandaVision 10 Things Only Comics Fans Know About Quicksilver

WandaVision shocked fans and opened up a brand new era in the MCU with the introduction of Quicksilver in episode five, played not by Aaron Taylor-Johnson but Evan Peters, from the Fox X-Men movie franchise. Quicksilver hasn’t been a huge focus in the movies, but he’s a major part of the Marvel comics.

The show has featured lots of Easter eggs and comic book references, and there are bound to be many more now with Quicksilver part of the cast. His history in the Marvel Universe is as long as complex as his sister, with lots of twists and turns along the way.

10 Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants

Quicksilver first appears, along with his sister, the Scarlet Witch (though she was decked out in green then), in Uncanny X-Men #4 (1964), which was created by the legendary comic duo, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They were both a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Though Wanda’s costume would evolve, Pietro Maximoff’s look was pretty much locked from his first appearance. His signature sky blue outfit, with the lightning bolt across his chest, has been his look for most of his comic book history, though it is yet to show up in the movies or television shows.

9 Son Of Magneto

Quicksilver was a member of the Brotherhood under the command of Magneto in the early days of the X-Men. Years later, it was revealed that Magneto was actually the father of both of the Maximoff twins.

In the original 1982 The Vision and the Scarlet Witch limited series, by writer Bill Mantlo and illustrative artist Rick Leonardi, Bova (the subject of one of the cleverest Easter eggs in episode two of WandaVision) reveals that Quicksilver and his sister are in fact the children of the mutant villain.

8 The High Evolutionary

Quicksilver’s parentage was retconned again in the Axis crossover event in 2014. In this story, it’s revealed that Pietro and Wanda aren’t the children of Magneto but instead regular humans, who received their powers from experiments done on them by The High Evolutionary.

This untangled the messy movie rights issue concerning the longstanding X-Men and Avengers characters right as they were featured in twin movies: the MCU’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron and X-Men: Days Of Futures Past.

7 Can Run At Mach 10

Most fans know Quicksilver can run really fast, but they might be surprised to learn how fast. Originally, he was only capable of running at the speed of sound, but later exposure to The High Evolutionary’s isotope E increased his powers and abilities significantly, which allowed Pietro to run put to Mach 10. This means that he runs at 7,680 miles per hour.

These experiments also protect him from the effects of running so fast. His body is insulated against friction, heat, and aerodynamic forces as he moves at super-speed, somewhat in the same way that The Flash is protected from his own powers by the Speed Force.

6 New Powers

Another revision in the comics that occurred in league with the retcon about Magneto was the loss of Quicksilver’s powers (in the Decimation of House Of M). He gains new powers courtesy of the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mist.

The mist gives Quicksilver the ability to displace himself out of mainstream time and space, and jump forward into the future. The Inhumans were elevated in the comic books and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a way to try and replace the X-Men thanks to the Disney/Fox rights issues, but this is all now moot.

5 Avengers

Quicksilver started off as a villain, but he and his sister quickly became heroes. They both joined the Avengers in Avengers #16 (1965). Together, with Captain America and Hawkeye, they become known as “Cap’s Kooky Quartet.”

Quicksilver always generated a lot of tension on the team though, vying for the leadership position and turning everyone off with his abrasive personality. He would go in and out of the team for years, with long stints well into the 90s. With his return to the MCU, he’s potentially a team member fans could see in Avengers 5.

4 Crystal And The Inhumans

Quicksilver was connected to the Inhumans long before the Terrigen Mists gave him new powers. He meets the Inhuman Crystal, a powerful female Marvel character who controls the elements after he is wounded by a Sentinel. They eventually fall in love and marry.

Both are major members of the Avengers in the late 80s and early 90s, though their relationship has a lot of ups and downs. They both have extra-marital affairs but try to make it work for the sake of their daughter, Luna.

3 Luna Maximoff

Luna Maximoff first appeared in Fantastic Four #240 (March 1982) and was created by writer and artist John Byrne. She was unique in that she was the first mutant-Inhuman child. Her lineage didn’t result in her being as powerful as her parents though. She didn’t have any powers at all, which disappointed Quicksilver enormously.

Many years later, after he lost his own powers thanks to Wanda’s actions in House Of M, he exposed them both to the Terrigen Mists. Luna gained the power to read the thoughts and emotions of others.

2 Ultimate Comics

Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch had a very different relationship in the Ultimate Comics universe of Earth-1610. This alternate reality gave Marvel the chance to update and modernize its classic characters without rebooting the main Marvel universe. It led to some fantastic creations, like Miles Morales, but it also made a lot of mistakes.

One of them was the decision to make Pietro and Wanda lovers, in a creepy and unnecessary plot wrinkle that only led to more dark and disturbing moments, like many in the Ultimatum crossover event.

1 House Of M

Quicksilver plays a pivotal role in House Of M, one of the comics that influences WandaVision. Wanda is breaking down over the loss of her children, Tommy and Billy, revealed to be magical constructs. Quicksilver learns that Magneto and Professor X essentially conspire to kill Wanda to prevent her from doing any more damage than she has (she’s already killed Hawkeye at this point).

His actions ultimately lead to her creating an alternate reality of House Of M, where the Magnus family is in control of the world. When the veil is lifted on this world, a confrontation with Magneto ends in Quicksilver’s death and Wanda retaliating by erasing most of the most mutants in existence.
