WandaVision 10 Things Only Comics Fans Know About Wiccan

WandaVision showcased the expanding powers of Billy and Tommy Maximoff in episode six, teasing the potential development of their comic book counterparts, Wiccan and Speed. Billy wore a Halloween version of his Wiccan costume in the episode and showed a little of why he’s such an important player in Marvel Comics.

Wiccan shares some of the Scarlet Witch’s powers and abilities which could be a good and bad thing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His story has been one of tragedy in the comics, but ultimately triumph, promising some dramatic stories ahead in the movies and TV.

10 Young Avengers

Wiccan first appeared in Young Avengers #1 in April 2005. He debuted alongside other teen heroes, all of whom shared some connection to established Avengers, like Hulking, Kid Loki, and the Kate Bishop Hawkeye.

Wiccan’s connection to any early Avengers wasn’t immediately obvious in the way it was for others, though his initial outfit did take some design cues from the God of Thunder, Thor, whom he looked up to. Wiccan was created by writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung.

9 Uncertain Codename

Billy’s codename Wiccan doesn’t seem to have any specific origin. He originally called himself the Asgardian, another nod to his idol Thor, but later changed it to Wiccan.

Some characters within the comics, like Power Man, questioned this as Billy doesn’t have any natural connection to the Wicca faith (Loki actually takes offense as a pagan deity himself). Billy experiments with some names, adopting the name Demiurge, but later reverts back to Wiccan.

8 True Parents

A lot of comic books inspired WandaVision, including House Of M and the 1985 The Vision And The Scarlet Witch limited series (by writer Steve Englehart and artist Richard Howell.) In that series, Wanda and Vision conceive twin sons.

Through a complicated set of circumstances, they eventually discover Tommy and Billy were created with magic and forged from fragments of the soul of the supervillain Mephisto. Wanda’s grief led to more tragedy, but in the Young Avengers, Billy realizes that he is the reincarnated son of the former Avengers.

7 Twin Brothers

When fans first met Billy, he was Billy Kaplan and he was just teammates with Tommy Shepherd, Speed. They discovered in the course of the 2010 story, The Children’s Crusade, that they are actually twin brothers and the long lost children of Vision and Scarlet Witch.

The two have been instrumental in helping their mother recover from her long period of grief and torment, though they have largely gone their separate ways in recent years. Wiccan is in space with his husband, Hulking, while Speed is on Earth hanging out with X-Factor.

6 Powers

Billy’s powers are very similar to his mother’s. He can alter and manipulate reality, though the extent of his power isn’t clear yet. When he was briefly the Asgardian, he displayed some of the powers of Thor, including generating lightning and flight.

This suggests that not only can Wiccan alter reality, but he can also alter his own being. Billy’s interest in sorcery also augments his powers and he is capable of many tremendous spells, including illusionary disguises, enchantments, and astral projection.

5 Possible Sorcerer Supreme

Doctor Strange is the quintessential Marvel master magician, but there are many versions of the Sorcerer Supreme in the comics. One of them is Wiccan. At the end of The Children’s Crusade, fans get a glimpse of the future of the characters.

Billy is seen in the garb of Doctor Strange, suggesting he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme at some point. Given his tremendous natural mutant ability and his facility with spells, this makes a lot of sense. Billy could even succeed Stephen Strange in the MCU.

4 Bullying Survivor

Billy first came to the Avengers because he was seeking refuge from the bullying he got in school. Other students bullied Billy for being gay, but he found support and love among the Avengers. His loyalties to the Avengers were cemented even further when he learned that the woman who had been helping him the most was his mother. The Scarlet Witch told him to stand up to his tormentors, which he did. She also healed the injuries he had suffered from his bullies. Since this moment, Wiccan has continued to be one of the most prominent LGBTQI+ characters in all of Marvel Comics.

3 Strikeforce

The MCU is building toward the Young Avengers it seems, with the introduction of Wiccan, Speed, and the Kate Bishop Hawkeye. But the team broke up a while back in the comics. After it did, Wiccan found himself on Strikeforce, a team of Marvel heroes that were dedicated to doing the dark and gritty missions that the others wouldn’t.

Among his teammates on this squad were Angela, Blade, Spider-Woman, Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier, Spectrum (better known as Monica Rambeau), and Daimon Hellstrom, most of whom are involved in the MCU right now or will be in the near future.

2 Guardians Of The Galaxy

Billy has also been part of another significant Marvel team: the Guardians of the Galaxy. Wiccan actually just joined up with this cosmic squad in the comics, an outgrowth of his mostly cosmic life these days with Hulking.

Wiccan and Hulkling are joining the Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series (written by Al Ewing and drawn by Juan Frigeri) starting with issue #13 in April 2021. They will suit up with current members Star-Lord, Nova, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon.

1 Romance With Hulking

Comic fans know one of the best things about Wiccan is his long-lasting relationship with his former Young Avengers teammate, Hulking. The two have been very close from the beginning, and after a lot of ups and downs, they got married last year during the massive Empyre crossover event.

It almost didn’t happen. Hulking had to leave Billy behind as he assumed the combined Kree-Skrull throne, but after a lot of soul searching, they worked out and now continue to fight for good together with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
