WandaVision: Why Scarlet Witch & Vision Have Twins In Marvel’s Disney+ Show

In Disney+’s WandaVision trailer, Scarlet Witch and Vision have twin children, but how is that possible and why do the superhero couple have babies?

Here’s why (and how) Scarlet Witch and Vision have twins in the WandaVision trailer. Released at the Emmy Awards ahead of the show’s release on Disney+ in December, the first trailer for the inaugural MCU show on Disney’s streaming platform offered hints of a strange but potentially dramatically important show. And while the biggest messages in there were the ones only hinted to, the reality created in WandaVision inspires some pointed questions, including the existence of Scarlet Witch’s children.

The very first teaser for WandaVision showed an image of Wanda next to a pair of baby cribs, sending speculative fans into a furor over the show’s use of a key comic book storyline that ties into comics storylines as prominent as Avengers Disassembled and House of M (not to mention the run in which Wanda and Vision actually have their twins). Given everything that Wanda has gone through in the MCU, giving her the hint of a happy ending and a family of her own is just reward. The problem, of course, is that, based on the comics, Wanda’s creation of her own happy ending can lead to disastrous results, and there have already been major hints in the MCU that Wanda’s grasp on reality can be dangerously frayed at times.

There are serious questions here that need to be answered, however. Particularly because the romance between a genetically-altered witch and an Infinity Stone-powered android doesn’t sound like the best grounding for starting a family. Biologically speaking, it’s improbable at best, but therein lies the key to all of what is seen in the WandaVision trailer: Wanda is building her own fantasy as a protection against her trauma.

Scarlet Witch and Vision’s twins are not only a nod to the events of the comic book House of M arc, but they’re also part of Wanda’s inherent need to escape her past. In the comics – Steve Englehart, Richard Howell, and Frank Springer series, ‘Vision and Scarlet Witch’ to be precise – Wanda gives birth, via the use of her magic to twin boys, William and Thomas, but it transpires that her babies are no more than a hysterical, magical reaction to her burning need to be a mother. Tragically, a further twist in the tale sees the children taken from her and her memory wiped, leading years later to the events of House of M when the memories of her lost children return and force her over the edge.

The suggestion of the WandaVision trailer is that Wanda’s story is changed somewhat from the comics origin, but her children come into existence for the same reason they did in the source material. The MCU Wanda has been through untold trauma, from the death of her parents to the HYDRA experiments that empowered her through to Quicksilver’s death in Age Of Ultron, her accidental mass murder in Africa, and then Vision’s double-whammy death in Infinity War. All of that paints a picture of someone robbed of her childhood and all conventional family and even with the support of the Avengers, it’s not hard to imagine that Wanda is pushed beyond her ability to stick to a reality that has hurt her so much. The twins shown in the trailer are Wanda’s heartbreaking wish fulfillment – the extrapolation of what she wanted from her relationship with Vision and also for herself: normalcy.

The boys’ existence in the MCU is, sadly, unlikely to be an allusion to Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed (who were, confusingly, revealed to be the reincarnated spirits of the “real” twins) but rather further suggestion that for all of WandaVision’s links to a sitcom (another projection of Wanda’s ideal family life), Scarlet Witch’s story has yet more sadness to come. Her twins, heartbreakingly, are confirmation of her lack of a grip on reality and it seems very likely that they will be the cause of what could be a catastrophic ending for WandaVision, if the links to House of M are any sort of hint.
