Elizabeth Olsen says upcoming episodes of Wandavision will explore more of Wanda’s repressed traumatic memories. Olsen reprises the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show on Disney+. The show, which is set directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame, is a departure for Marvel, as it takes the form of a classic sitcom, each episode placing Wanda and Vision (Paul Bettany) in a retro sitcom situation that references a famous TV show from a different decade. However, underlying the shiny happy facade is a dark mystery, slowly being revealed with each episode.
Wandavision season 1, episode 3, “Now In Color,” is set in a 70s-style sitcom and features Wanda giving birth to twins just a few hours after discovering she’s pregnant. Late in the episode, Wanda tells her neighbor Geraldine (Teyonah Parris) that she was a twin and becomes emotional while thinking about her brother, Pietro/Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The scene ends with Wanda realizing Geraldine isn’t who she claims to be and ejecting her from her constructed reality.
Speaking to TVLine, Olsen says the episode 3 scene won’t be the last time Wandavision explores Wanda’s repressed memories. As the series continues, “those kinds of moments” will happen more, as Wanda’s constructed reality is interrupted by the outside world and her traumatic memories of it. Olsen also clarifies the twins she gave birth to are “real,” hinting that the children she has with Vision may survive the series’s events. You can read her full comments below:
The experience of having just gone through real birth — like a real birth experience, because they’re real, breathing creatures that she’s given birth to – I believe that’s what has sparked this memory that was squashed. She starts to really connect back in with these memories that aren’t on the surface. And we will continue to watch her discover more of those kinds of moments.
Olsen’s revelation confirms that as Wandavision continues, the real world will increasingly start to intrude on Wanda’s sitcom-style alternate reality. Just what her reality is, and how it’s affecting the world around her, is unknown at this point. Still, it’s now clear, thanks to what was revealed in episode 3, that at least some of the show’s characters have been sent by the mysterious organization SWORD to try and bring Wanda back to reality.
It’s also clear that Wanda is trying to block out her past trauma, which is why she got so angry when she remembered Pietro. That means future episodes could show Wanda’s reality breaking down further, especially if she remembers that Vision was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Just when and how that will happen remains to be seen, but it is sure to upend Wandavision’s established universe when it does.
