A former patrol officer and original heir of the Captain Marvel moniker, Monica Rambeau has become a breakout star in the eyes of casual audiences thanks to her live-action portrayal in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision. While Monica has slightly faded in prominence since her initial debut within Marvel Comics, award-winning comic book artist Brian Stelfreeze helps return the classic hero to the forefront with his colorful comic-accurate fan sketch.
While Carol Danvers has become most associated with the Captain Marvel mantle in recent years, it was initially Monica Rambeau who was tasked to take on the title. Involved in a freak explosion, Monica became bombarded with cosmic radiation, which imbued her with a range of energy manipulating abilities. It wasn’t long before a powered Rambeau became intricately tied with the wider array of superheroes on Earth, which quickly led to Monica’s recruitment to join the Avengers. Being promoted to leader of the Avengers for a time, Rambeau led the team in several Marvel events from 1984’s Secret Wars to 1986/87’s Under Siege. More recently, Rambeau has served as a member of the cosmic superhero force known as the Ultimates, which included the likes of Black Panther, Carol Danvers, Ms. America, and Monica’s former boyfriend Blue Marvel. Whether it’s as Spectrum or Photon, Monica continues to traverse Earth and the larger cosmos as one of the most powerful superheroes in existence.
Though Monica Rambeau’s next onscreen adventure may be a couple years away, comic book veteran Brian Stelfreeze brought his own reimagining of the fan-favorite character for 2021’s coveted New York Comic Con. The incredibly stylized art features a glowing Monica in her original comic book Captain Marvel attire from her early debut in 1982’s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16, courtesy of writer Roger Stern (Doctor Strange, Avengers) and artist John Romita Jr. (Uncanny X-Men, Daredevil). Stelfreeze’s early draft of the sketch can additionally be spotted in his Twitter feed, taken from Brian’s home studio.

Stelfreeze, a co-founder of Atlanta’s Gaijin Studios independent comic art group, is no stranger to the world of Marvel Comics; having worked on the cover and interior art for Black Panther, Domino, and Excalibur among other hit titles. Alongside Monica, Stelfreeze’s moderated Twitter account is host to a handful of art featuring strong Marvel Comics female characters including the multiversal Spider-Gwen, expertly skilled mutant Psylocke, duplicitous Loki variant Sylvie, as well as Avenger Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in both her comic and MCU iterations.
Even though the character made quite the splash in the early ’80s, Rambeau never truly received her due, beyond acting as the Avengers’ first female African American member during Roger Stern’s acclaimed run on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. As the stardom of the former Captain Marvel rises within the public consciousness once again, it’s gratifying to see well-established comic book artists and writers such as Brian Stelfreeze pushing WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau to the forefront once again.
