During a recent Ubisoft Forward, it was revealed that Aiden Pearce, lead character of the original Watch Dogs game, would be a playable character in Watch Dogs: Legion via the game’s season pass. Aiden began Watch Dogs as a hacker and a thief, but how did he end his story?
The original Watch Dogs was a single player game starring hacker Aiden Pearce. Over the course of the game, he worked with DedSec, a hacker collective that works against the use of the Central Operating Systems (ctOS) that electronically connects everything from surveillance to traffic signals to personal data. While the first and second Watch Dogs focused on a single protagonist, Watch Dogs: Legion will star the whole of the DedSec group. Players can recruit almost any NPC in Watch Dogs: Legion to the DedSec cause, and then play as those NPCs throughout the game, switching whenever they want.
What Aiden Pearce Has Been Doing Since Watch Dogs
Aiden seems to be living up to his promise to protect and punish during his brief appearance in Watch Dogs 2, where lead character Marcus helps him take down a human trafficking ring in San Francisco. Aiden has clearly become a mobile vigilante, leaving his city of Chicago for wherever there is injustice he believes needs correcting. That would explain why he’s on the scene in London in Watch Dogs: Legion, where a private military contractor called Albion has been establishing a police state in the name of protecting the citizens from terrorism. But whether or not DedSec will be happy to see Aiden is another matter entirely. DedSec and Aiden were allies in Watch Dogs, until Aiden denied DedSec the opportunity to completely take over the ctOS system, a decision which ended their working relationship.
It’s also unclear if players themselves will be happy to see Aiden return to the franchise. While the announcement video from Ubisoft claimed that Aiden was a character fans had been asking for, the internet reactions to Aiden’s return to Watch Dogs has been negative, citing him as a bland character at best and an outright villain at worst. It also might be jarring to have Aiden, a character with more solid backstory and character motivations, in a game where players are using NPCs whose backstories will be filled in with the player’s imagination. Specific details about Aiden’s adventures in London are still to come, but he might not receive the welcome Ubisoft was hoping for.
