A Pokémon fan has recreated the show’s iconic intro using only stock footage, with amusing results. Pokémon is one of the most dominant franchises of the past 30 years, but few installments are as beloved as the original season of the anime that aired in the late 1990s. The intro and theme song urging viewers to “catch ‘em all” remain instantly recognizable, leading to a number of parodies and remixes by viewers.

Before Mega Evolutions, Z-moves, Gigantamaxing, or EX cards, there was just the Kanto region and the 151 Pokémon breeds who inhabited it. The original Indigo League series of the Pokémon anime ran for 82 episodes in Kanto, which is still the longest individual series the show has had. Many of the franchise’s most iconic Pokémon were introduced in that first generation, including Pikachu, Charizard, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Meowth, Mewtwo, and Mew. Though hundreds more Pokémon have been added to the Pokédex over the years, the first generation remains the most iconic for many.

YouTuber Matthew Highton has returned to the original Pokémon intro in a new video but with a twist. In a side-by-side presentation, Highton recreates the entire opening sequence to the first anime series using only stock footage. The result is a hilarious hodgepodge, featuring apples and tennis balls standing in for Pokéballs, a number of unwitting real-life animals, and a cameo from Pikachu’s famous parade balloon.

Highton’s video is a fun homage full of nostalgia and interesting creative choices. It also shows why Pokémon’s popularity has stayed strong over the past two and a half decades, despite the franchise shifting focus a bit in recent years. The video games, trading cards, and anime are all still cornerstones of the Pokémon brand, but the advent of Pokémon GO has added a fourth pillar. The mobile augmented reality game has had huge success, especially with older fans who no longer play the games but still have fondness for the franchise and a desire to catch them all.

A new divergent entry in the Pokémon video game series, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, was also recently announced for the Nintendo Switch. The new title promises a more open-world monster catching experience and some big potential shifts to the core combat system. For a franchise that has rarely altered its formula over the years, that’s both exciting news and a big risk for Nintendo. Hopefully, the new game can help bring the Pokémon franchise into the future alongside clever fans like Highton.
