Werewolf By Night Is Marvel’s Most Exciting New Character

Warning: spoilers for Werewolf By Night #2 are ahead.

Marvel’s new Werewolf By Night series is shaping up to be a fascinating examination of legacy characters. It is no secret that legacy characters are a common occurrence in superhero comics, with a new character taking over the mantle from a previous character. With their series, writers Taboo and Benjamin Earl are expanding the significance of legacy for a character like never before, in a way that can only be done with a Werewolf By Night story.

This new take on Werewolf By Night stars a teen of Hopi and Mexican descent named Jake Gomez, who lives on a Hopi reservation in Arizona. Jake is a werewolf, with the ability having been passed on to him by his estranged father, and he uses his powers to protect the people of his reservation. Thus far in the series, Jake has begun to uncover shady aspects about the pharmaceutical company he works for and a more pressing problem of vanishing Native people in his community.

Werewolf By Night #2 launched a few key themes likely to remain constant throughout the series, most notably the idea of legacy. In this issue, with art by Scot Eaton, inks by Scott Hanna, colors by Miroslav Mrva, and letters by VC’s Joe Sabino, Jake is gravely injured after brawling with three cyborg monsters who were kidnapping some local people. Over the course of the fight, Jake had begun to lose control over his werewolf side, becoming more violent than he would like to be. Taking shelter in a cave afterwards, he reflects on his relationship with his father, and how it is wrapped up in their shared identities as werewolves. It is this moment of vulnerability for Jake that allows for Taboo and Earl to emphasize their new take on legacy for Werewolf By Night.

Legacy has always been an important part of Werewolf By Night, but it is brought into new light with Taboo and Earl’s writing. Unlike the previous Werewolf By Night, Jack Russell, Jake is not ashamed of his heritage. Instead, he is proud to be Hopi, and by extension, also a werewolf. This is rendered beautifully by Scot Eaton’s art in issue #2, where Jake and his father’s roots as both Native Americans and werewolves are depicted side by side. It is a moment that firmly establishes Jake’s view of himself as a hero, just like the moment in The Amazing Spider-Man #33 where Peter Parker frees himself from fallen debris after thinking of his duty towards his family.

Through these panels, the rage that drives Jake’s werewolf side is revealed to be a rage shared by his father and ancestors. This is a key departure form the family curse narrative of Jack Russell in the early Werewolf By Night comics, because it reimagines legacy as an interconnected network linking the past, present, and future, rather than inherited baggage as a result of someone’s misdeeds from long ago. This new perspective applies to Jake’s depiction as a legacy character–one that is not weighed down by the specifics of how Jack Russell’s powers worked in the past, but is instead a successor in spirit more than anything else.

With Jake having made peace with his werewolf heritage, and having pride in his Native heritage, Werewolf By Night offers a new take on how legacy can operate on multiple levels for protagonists. This is a development specific to Werewolf By Night as a series due to the role that family plays in the lives and powers of its heroes. Though the series has just gotten underway, the future of Werewolf By Night looks bright, and limitless in its expansion of a classic character.
