Wesley Snipes Denies Blade 3 OnSet Behavior Rumor

Wesley Snipes denies long-standing rumors that he behaved badly on the set of Blade: Trinity. Long before comic book movies came to rule the box office, Snipes made his mark in the genre with his portrayal of the Marvel vampire slayer, starring in a trio of Blade films climaxing with 2004’s Blade: Trinity.

Though box office remained consistent across the three Blade films (the third grossed $132 million, compared to $131 million for the first and $155 million for the second), the dark superhero franchise was nixed after Trinity. Snipes’ reputation later took a hard hit as his Blade: Trinity co-star Patton Oswalt let loose with a series of reports about Snipes’ behavior on set, including allegations that he tried to strangle director David S. Goyer. Another of Oswalt’s hilarious tales claimed Snipes largely stayed sequestered in his trailer during shooting and only communicated via Post-it notes he would sign simply “Blade.”

Years after Oswalt first made his revelations about Snipes being a difficult co-star on Blade: Trinity, Snipes has again offered up his own take on the situation, issuing firm denials to all of Oswalt’s accusations while taking his own shots at the well-known comedian and actor (via The Guardian). First off, Snipes hit back at accusations that he attacked director Goyer, saying:

“Let me tell you one thing. If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me now. A Black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you.”

As for the story about him only using Post-it notes to communicate, Snipes made light of the allegation, shooting back “Once again, Mr. Oswalt is the authority. Hohoho! Why do people believe this guy’s version of this story? Answer me that.” Snipes then offered an even stronger response to Oswalt, saying:

“This is part of the challenges that we as African Americans face here in America – these microaggressions. The presumption that one white guy can make a statement and that statement stands as true! Why would people believe his version is true? Because they are predisposed to believing the Black guy is always the problem. And all it takes is one person, Mr. Oswalt, who I really don’t know. I can barely remember him on the set, but it’s fascinating that his statement alone was enough to make people go: ‘Yeah, you know Snipes has got a problem.’”

Snipes of course did have a serious problem with the IRS years ago, landing in prison for tax evasion. After becoming a star in the 1980s and 1990s, Blade lifted Snipes to even greater prominence, but his career has suffered ever since then. Snipes did however enjoy something of a comeback in 2019 with his appearance as egomaniac director D’urville Martin in Eddie Murphy’s comedic biopic Dolemite is My Name.

Whether one believes Oswalt’s stories about Snipes, there’s no question Hollywood soured on the Blade actor for a multitude of reasons after leading the trilogy of dark superhero movies to a reasonable measure of box office success. Though it doesn’t look like Snipes himself will be back as an A-list star any time soon, Blade will be back for a reboot movie starring Mahershala Ali as the comic book vampire hunter. Snipes no doubt is experiencing a certain bitterness at seeing his most famous character go to a different actor when he is himself still just 58 years old and likely perfectly capable of taking on the physical demands of playing the role. But, Snipes himself certainly is at least partly responsible for no longer being on Hollywood’s list for movies like Blade, and it’s in fact telling that no one ever seriously questioned Oswalt’s accusations about him when they first came out in the wake of Blade: Trinity.
