What A Fall Animal Crossing Update Could Look Like

As more and more time passes between Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates, it starts to look increasingly likely that the next big change won’t come until significantly later on in 2021. This raises the possibility of whether this autumn will come with any additions to the game, and if so, what features could be improved upon or added.

Summer and fall of last year brought what was perhaps some of Animal Crossing’s biggest changes. The summer 2020 New Horizons update, which was released in two waves, added a new feature to the game in the form of diving. It also expanded the museum and introduced a couple of returning characters to New Horizons. The autumn update added farming mechanics, a first for the series, allowing players to grow pumpkins for DIY recipes.

In response to player criticism that recent Animal Crossing updates have lacked substantial new content, Nintendo promised that significant updates to New Horizons will come in the near future. However, summer 2021 has nearly passed without any remarkable changes, making it seem more likely that 2021’s next major update will come either during the fall or perhaps the holiday season. If it releases this autumn, what could the next New Horizons update look like?

Animal Crossing Could Expand Farming Or Add New Buildings In Fall 2021

One possibility for a fall update to New Horizons could be an expansion to the game’s farming features. Pumpkins are currently the only crop that can be grown, aside from the fruit trees that have appeared in all other games across the franchise. Perhaps a cooking mechanic could even be introduced such as what’s seen in similar games like Stardew Valley. If islands are expanded, which has been hinted at in recent rumored Animal Crossing leaks, players could be provided with more room to build a proper area for their crops. Given how much customization plays a factor in New Horizons, it would be a great way to help further set it apart from its predecessors.

Another alternative for a fall New Horizons update, which seems equally plausible given the possibility of island expansions, is the introduction of new or returning buildings to the game. Brewster’s Roost has yet to appear in New Horizons despite frequent requests from Animal Crossing fans, and autumn would be a perfect time to bring it back. It could also come with the return of side jobs, allowing players to work as a barista or even expand into new employment opportunities. Not only would this provide more ways to make Bells, it would also add significantly expanded levels of playability. Alternatively, given that fall is often seen as the back-to-school season, a school could appear in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There are plenty of opportunities to branch into areas that haven’t been explored yet, and these possibilities are only a brief speculation into what might be coming if a major update occurs this fall.
