What A Matrix Game Could Look Like If It Was Actually Good

The Matrix has not seen a video game adaptation since The Matrix Online shut down its servers over a decade ago in 2009. Now, with a new sequel on the horizon and some recent controversy surrounding the meaning behind the movies, it begs the question of what a great modern day Matrix game could look like.

The key thing to remember is that a Matrix game should fit in well with the themes of its source material. On top of the original film being an allegory for transgenderism and the transition between two identities, the series as a whole also delivers a potent message about the power of choice, as the protagonist’s battle against the machines centers around the conflict between free will and determinism. This conflict is well-suited to video games, as out of any artistic medium, games provide the most opportunities for players to exercise their right to choose. Because of this, great cyberpunk and sci-fi RPGs and adventure games such as Deus Ex and Watch Dogs would be great examples to base a Matrix game off of.

Naturally, this would mean that a great Matrix game would be an RPG of some kind. This may be part of the reason that The Matrix Online managed to accrue a small but dedicated following during its time, while most other Matrix games died out much more quickly. By allowing players to choose their factions, and therefore how the player affected the world of The Matrix, they kept closer to the original ideas of the source material. This does not mean that The Matrix needs another MMO, but a well-written RPG boasting a variety of quests with branching pathways would emphasize the themes of free will, and ground the game more firmly in the source material that Matrix fans are trying to vicariously live in.

A Matrix Game Should Stay Fresh While Keeping True To The Original’s Ideas

The idea of expanding the player’s options should not stop at the questlines. It should penetrate the gameplay and the game world itself. This means opening The Matrix game’s setting up to places Matrix games have never seen before. Basically, there should be gameplay segments that take place outside of The Matrix itself. Players should be able to pilot the hoverships, play as machines, or even as support characters inside the Matrix by taking the role of the Operators, who spawn guns and monochrome outfits for soldiers within the program. A Matrix video game could be much more than a bullet-time shooter or an open-world RPG, though those aren’t necessarily out of the question. It could be a flight simulator or a hacking simulator. There are many diverse characters who fulfill many roles within the world of The Matrix, and players should be allowed to do things other than wear black trench coats and dodge bullets (no matter how cool those things are).

However, to do that a new Matrix video game would have to accomplish one goal: players should not control Neo. In fact, it’d likely be best if Neo wasn’t involved at all, nor any of The Matrix’s iconic characters. Lore-wise, there are multiple other versions of the Matrix programs with multiple other “Ones,” each with their own storyline that the developers of a Matrix game could explore. Of course, it’s also true that up until Neo each of these stories ends basically the same way, but that would still provide the writers with plenty of leeway in terms of how creative they can get with the setting and characters.

It may also be that having a single ending to a The Matrix game might play in its favor. After all, determinism is the primary opposing force in The Matrix. Regardless, if players are going to struggle against determinism (however vainly) then they must be able to exercise their free will, and they can’t do that if they are playing as the main character from the movies. There’s already a fun, yet extremely janky, game about that anyway.

The Matrix is a very popular and beloved series. If a new game were to be made the right way, it’s important that the developers stay true to the ideas that defined the original source material for what it was. Players don’t need a Path of Neo 2, and they definitely don’t want something so original it seems almost unrecognizable when compared to the originals. Keeping to those same overarching themes of choice in terms of both the story and the gameplay would find that happy middle ground between being unoriginal and being too original.
