What Darth Vader Actually Sees When Wearing His Helmet

Star Wars’ Darth Vader is best known for the suit and helmet he always wears, but what does he see inside the helmet? The Star Wars universe began in 1977 with the movie now known as Star Wars: A New Hope, the first chapter in what would not only become a saga of nine movies but also one of the biggest and most profitable franchises in the entertainment industry. Its characters are now part of pop culture, and one of the most popular ones is Darth Vader.

The famous Sith lord was introduced in A New Hope as the main villain, and continued to play that role in the sequels Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and he found redemption in the latter when he saved his son, Luke Skywalker, from the Emperor. Darth Vader’s backstory was explored years later in the prequel trilogy, which followed Anakin Skywalker from his days as a slave in Tatooine to his rise as a Sith lord, and showed why he needs to wear his unforgettable suit and helmet all the time, while also giving a quick glimpse at what the world looks like inside the helmet.

During the final act of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Anakin battled his master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) in Mustafar, which ended with Kenobi severing Anakin’s (who had already become Darth Vader) legs and left arm. Kenobi left him to burn at the bank of a lava flow, and he was later rescued by Palpatine. The Emperor took his apprentice to Coruscant to be treated, and in order to survive, he was put into a life-sustaining black suit of armor with three robotic limbs and a mask and helmet that helped him breathe and see better. When the helmet is put on Vader for the first time, there’s a glimpse at what he sees through it, and contrary to what some might believe, he doesn’t see the world the same way he did before he got the Darth Vader armor.

As Vader was lying down, with many lights over him, what he saw were those lights in a red/orange tint and different data around them. As his retinas were so injured they couldn’t be repaired, the helmet was given optical filters to block excess light and thus protect Vader’s eyes while also allowing him to see. Through these filters, the scientists behind the armor expanded the limits of human vision by having it detect infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths, which is why when he gets the helmet in Revenge of the Sith he sees different tones of red, data, and some basic shapes and grids as part of the information the helmet offers of the objects and people in Vader’s field of vision. Although he didn’t have a normal vision anymore, the helmet gave it an even better one as it also allowed him to see in complete darkness, giving him a big advantage over many of his enemies.

Of course, all these advantages came at a huge and painful price, and it surely wasn’t easy for Darth Vader to get used to having a limited field of vision that displayed different data and gave the world a red/orange tint. As the Star Wars universe is in constant change, it wouldn’t be surprising if more things were added to what Darth Vader’s helmet could and couldn’t do, but for now, these are the things that he could see through his iconic mask.
