What D&D 5e Feats Are Best (& Worst) For Combat

Feats are an optional rule in Dungeons & Dragons that allows players to further customize their characters. Instead of simply increasing an attribute, choosing a D&D feat can provide a character with unique advantages that shake up their playstyle. Although some feats cater more to the roleplay elements of Dungeons & Dragons, others can significantly increase a character’s abilities in combat.

Great Weapon Master is one of the more popular feats in Dungeons & Dragons, and it also happens to be one of the strongest. Great Weapon Master allows a player to take an extra attack after killing a creature with a melee weapon, an ability that synergizes well with most martial classes. In addition, players can choose to take a minus-five penalty on a melee attack (with a heavy weapon) in order to deal an additional 10 damage. When fighting monsters with lower armor classes, this feature offers a significant boost in overall damage. For Rangers and Fighters that prefer ranged weapons, the Sharpshooter feat includes the same plus-10 damage option.

For defense-oriented characters, Sentinel may be the strongest choice. When players with the Sentinel feat make an opportunity attack against an enemy, they stop that enemy in its tracks by lowering its speed to zero. This makes Sentinels ideal “tanks,” since it will be difficult for creatures to make their way past them. Sentinels can also use their reaction as an attack when a monster attacks a nearby party member, something which helps to protect their teammates even further.

Dungeons & Dragons’ Most Useful Feats For Combat

For characters that focus on spellcasting, the War Caster feat is one of the strongest choices. War Caster gives a spellcaster advantage on constitution saves to maintain their concentration, which applies to some of the most powerful spells in Dungeons & Dragons. War Caster also allows characters to cast a spell as an opportunity attack, helping them to match martial classes in damage output. Finally, since War Caster allows spells to be cast more easily while wielding weapons, it is ideal for hybrid classes, such as Bards and Hexblade Warlocks.

Although most feats are helpful in battle, some are clearly built for the non-combat aspects of Dungeons & Dragons. Ritual Casting is a powerful feat, allowing a character to keep a short list of spells that they can cast without using spell slots, but it has a key limitation. Ritual casting requires 10 minutes in order to cast a spell and, considering an individual turn is only six seconds long, ritual casting is useless during combat encounters.

Linguist is another feat that could be helpful in specific situations but will rarely make a difference while fighting monsters. The ability to learn three new languages could be useful for gaining information or for roleplaying, but it is not as helpful when it comes to combat. It could theoretically be used to talk a group of enemies out of attacking the player’s party, but it may be best to be stronger in case those negotiations fail. The feat does increase a character’s Intelligence by one, though, so it’s not totally useless for Wizards and other Intelligence-based characters.

Every feat can be beneficial for a Dungeons & Dragons party, whether that feat is useful within combat or outside of it. The most important thing for players to do is make sure the feats they choose synergize well with their D&D class and character, so that their choice is not wasted on a feature that rarely makes an impact.
