What DLC Pokémon BDSP Needs To Expand Gameplay

Exploring the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is a truly nostalgic experience. With dialogue, storylines, and a regional Pokédex that all mirror the original games, the remakes do a good job of reviving the 2006 classics with modern improvements. However, in sticking to the source material so closely, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have missed out on major improvements and gameplay mechanics that could make a new journey through Sinnoh more satisfying. While nothing has been confirmed yet, the introduction of DLC expansions similar to Sword and Shield could be the perfect opportunity to introduce missing content to the new games.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl aren’t the first generations of Pokémon games to be updated in recent years. In 2014, just after the release of Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were released for the same console. The remakes reinvented the Hoenn region from the 3rd Generation of the Pokémon series, updating Game Boy Advanced graphics with 3D models, introducing Pokémon species from newer regions, and implementing the Mega Evolution mechanic that had been a staple of X and Y. While the original Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald were innovative and important titles in the history of the series, the remakes brought new life to the story and made the game fresh for both new and returning players.

Unfortunately, the same expansions to gameplay weren’t included in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, with the base mechanics a mirror of the original game. While a few notable changes include Super Contests and the Grand Underground, both of which do a good job of reimagining Diamond and Pearl’s mini-games and a clothing customization option in BDSP, these changes don’t greatly improve the playability of the game. They also don’t challenge some of the big issues that were originally present in Diamond and Pearl. A limited regional Pokédex is again present in Pokémon BDSP, making team building and strategy in the early parts of the game difficult. Lacking character improvements make main NPCs uninteresting, and a predictable villain story arc creates a lack of fulfillment when trying to protect the world. This is especially frustrating after the unique narrative choices introduced in Sword and Shield’s main storyline.

Pokémon BDSP DLC Could Add Missing Mechanics Like Mega Evolution

What DLC Pokémon BDSP Needs To Expand Gameplay

To help create a more diverse battle experience, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl could release DLC with a post-game storyline featuring Mega Evolution. Found in numerous Pokémon games, Mega Evolution allows certain Pokémon to evolve temporarily in battle with the use of a Mega Stone. Players must travel the region to locate the Mega Stones, and then pair them with the correct Pokémon to unlock the ability. Once Mega Evolved, the Pokémon gets a big boost to stats and can deliver devastating damage in battle, as well as obtaining an exciting, temporary appearance. Some Pokémon like Charizard and Mewtwo have multiple Mega Evolution forms, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

A Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl DLC for Mega Evolution could start with an announcement that Mega Stones have been located in Veilstone City. Players could then travel to the city and obtain the Key Stone, which syncs trainers to the Mega Stone held by their Pokémon. The expansion could include new Mega Evolution forms specifically focused on Sinnoh Pokémon, including the region’s starters. This would allow players new options to hunt down and try out.

The storyline could even feature a cameo appearance of the Kalos Pokémon Professor Sycamore, who could team up with the player and Professor Rowan to research Mega Evolution effects in the Sinnoh region. Not only would this give players a new post-game story to enjoy, but it would make unlocking the Nation Pokédex a more rewarding task.

DLC For Pokémon BDSP Could Introduce Travel To Other Regions

DLC for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl could also unite the Sinnoh storyline with a different Pokémon region. While this type of DLC is unlikely due to how complex each Pokémon region has become, it could become possible to travel to a single city from another Pokémon region. Traveling to Wyndon in the Galar region of Sword and Shield could give players the chance to engage in tournaments with Galar Gym Leaders and prominent characters, as well as potentially engage in Dynamax or Gigantamax battles. Traveling to Hoenn’s Lilycove City would allow players to access another department store, and potentially purchase outfits based on the fashion worn by the main characters of the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games.

It could also be possible to use DLC to add whole new areas to BDSP’s map. Much like The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra DLC for Sword and Shield, the main storyline could be expanded into new, open-world areas. These locations could possess new Grand Underground maps, as well as new Super Contest halls, adding different challenges for players to complete. It could also be a chance to build on both existing and potentially new NPCs, fleshing out personalities and offering players further ways to engage with characters that were lacking in deeper personalities during the main storyline. An open-world map would also introduce new areas outside of the Grand Underground for wild Pokémon to spawn in. While a major feature in Pokémon Sword and Shield, the absence of overworld Pokémon spawns in Brilliant Diamond and Shinning Pearl has left the world largely empty. Seeing additional species wandering around a DLC location could be the perfect way to better incorporate the feature.

While additional areas would be an exciting expansion to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, DLC focused on increasing the National Pokédex would also be beneficial. Currently, the regional Sinnoh Dex only includes 151 Pokémon, while the National Dex stops at the first 4 Generations of the series. This greatly limits the variety of Pokémon to catch and is frustrating for those who got their start in the series on more recent games, potentially locking them out of their favorite Pokémon.

While this type of DLC would likely only apply to post-game content, it would allow both Shiny hunters and Battle-heavy players a better variety and access to type combos more common in later Pokémon species. While nothing has currently been confirmed regarding DLC for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the addition of expanded content for the games would likely appeal to players of all types, and make the titles more enjoyable and satisfying for both new and long-term fans of the series.
