What Does Batman Carry In His Utility Belt

The superhero Batman’s famous utility belt almost always appears on his suits – but what exactly does the Caped Crusader carry inside it? The yellow belt (one of the very few brightly-colored elements Batman allows on his person) is a staple of the character ever since his debut in Detective Comics #27 in 1937, granting him access to a myriad number of gadgets and accessories that better allow him to be combat the criminal element plaguing the streets and alleyways of Gotham City. Like all superheroes, (and the rest of the Bat-Family, even Nightwing), Batman regularly updates his utility belt, but multiple items have remained since the beginning.

The first tool used by Batman didn’t come from his utility belt at all. Midway through Batman’s first adventure in Detective Comics #27, Bruce Wayne used a nearby wrench to smash a glass trap and escape. The belt didn’t come into play until the subsequent issue, Detective Comics #28, when Batman was escaping from the police. He “…draws a tough, silk rope from his belt” and used it to swing from one rooftop to another. This would be the predecessor to Batman’s famous grappling hook gun, a device the Dark Knight now carries regularly into combat. Many, many other gadgets would soon follow.

Many impromptu guides have been written within comics concerning exactly how Batman fits his devices into his belt. The one pictured below depicts a two-way radio (for communication with the Batmobile, the Batcave and Alfred), storage for batarangs, smoke bombs, tear gas, an underwater breathing apparatus, a flashlight and more. Notably it also has space for a “batline”, meaning this guide was created before Batman adopted his grapple gun. Also note the micro-cassette recorder and miniature camera – two devices which are much smaller nowadays.

More modern variations of Batman’s belt include sonic and flash grenades, tasers, small explosives, a knife, handcuffs, and even brass knuckles. The campy 60′ Batman TV show starring Adam West famously featured more comic-relief gadgets, including Bat-Shark repellant spray featured in Batman: The Movie. Perhaps the most famous gadget carried in Batman’s utility belt is a small piece of green Kryptonite (usually set in a ring). This was given to Batman by Superman in the unlikely event that a supervillain was able to take control of the Man of Steel…or if Superman turned evil and couldn’t be stopped by any other means. This is a last-resort item, one that Superman entrusts to Batman (and only Batman).

Batman’s utility belt contains well over 25 items – but the number often changes depending on how Batman has prepared for an upcoming mission or fight. It’s widely said among Batman fan circles that the Caped Crusader can defeat any foe and overcome any situation, given enough prep time. From a simple rope to a Kryptonite-based weapon, it’s safe to say that Batman’s utility belt is instrumental in helping him prepare for anything.
