Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn shares what he thinks of Disney+’s new IMAX feature for Marvel Cinematic Universe titles. Gunn first brought the MCU’s cosmic superhero team to life with the eponymous 2014 starring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Groot. The films also saw the MCU introductions of Michael Rooker’s Yondu, Lee Pace’s Ronan, Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Benicio del Toro’s The Collector, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Josh Brolin taking over the role of Thanos.

Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films have been both critical and commercial smash hits for Marvel, hauling in a combined $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Development on a third installment was briefly marred by Gunn’s dismissal from the project by Disney and Marvel due to controversial old tweets being resurfaced by conservative publications, though the studios would reverse their decision shortly thereafter when the writer/director was scooped up by Warner Bros. for The Suicide Squad. Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently underway and is expected to conclude around April 2022.

In response to his praise of The Suicide Squad’s 4K Ultra-HD format, one fan took to Twitter to ask Gunn his thoughts on Disney+’s new IMAX feature. The Guardians of the Galaxy director responded with his belief that “at this point in history,” streaming still can’t compete with a 4K Blu-ray. See what Gunn said below:

Disney+’s IMAX feature marked an interesting new innovation for the House of Mouse’s streaming platform, instituting the larger aspect ratio into some of the MCU’s most-celebrated titles, namely both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. While other MCU filmmakers such as Avengers: Endgame’s Anthony Russo have praised the new feature, it appears Gunn isn’t fully on board with the streaming presentation. Given IMAX presentations are more about a wider screen presentation than a visually detailed one, it’s understandable Gunn would still prefer the visibly crisp nature of a 4K UHD Blu-ray in comparison to that of the Disney+ IMAX format.

Additionally, given Gunn has packed both of his Guardians of the Galaxy movies to the brim with Easter eggs, some of which still have yet to be discovered, it makes sense the writer/director has a better appreciation for a version in which audiences can properly hunt for them all. Despite his preference for a 4K Blu-ray, it is important to note Gunn says “at this point in history,” making for the possibility that a clean 4K stream in the future could change the filmmaker’s opinion. Audiences will have to wait and see what IMAX plans Gunn has in store for the future when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
