What Happened To Annie In Twin Peaks 2017 (Why Heather Graham Didn’t Return)

Where was Heather Graham’s Annie Blackburn during the events of Twin Peaks: The Return and why didn’t the actress return for the revival? Twin Peaks is a landmark TV series, bringing a uniquely cinematic flair and style to television that had never been seen before. David Lynch and Mark Frost co-created the show, which takes place in the titular town following the murder of teenager Laura Palmer. Kyle MacLachlan’s enduringly quirky FBI agent Cooper is sent to investigate and in the process digs up a lot of dark secrets about the townspeople – and the sinister forces surrounding it.

The show was a combination of thriller, soap opera, horror, comedy and about a half dozen other genres. Twin Peaks made for event TV during its first season, but the network’s insistence on revealing Laura’s killer early in season 2 had the side effect of killing interest in the series and hurting the narrative. It was cancelled following the second season due to declining ratings and Lynch’s 1992 prequel movie Fire Walk With Me was a box-office flop upon release, but is now considered one of his most underrated movies.

The show was revived with 2017’s Twin Peaks: The Return, which received both critical acclaim and utter bafflement by critics and audiences. While a lot of the original cast returned, including MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee and Miguel Ferrer, there were notable absences too, including Piper Laurie, Joan Chen and Heather Graham, who played Annie Blackburn, Cooper’s love interest in the final episodes of Twin Peaks season 2.

Annie was the half-sister of Double R Diner owner Norma and had a troubled past which led her to spend years in a convent. She returns to Twin Peaks and works at the diner, where she meets Cooper and they fall in love. In the Twin Peaks season 2 finale, she’s kidnapped by Cooper’s nemesis Windom Earle and dragged into the Black Lodge. She and Cooper’s doppelganger – who became known as Mr. C – later leave the lodge and she’s taken to hospital to be treated her injuries. Annie also made a cameo in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, where she tries to warn Laura of her impending death and that the “good” Dale is still trapped.

Laura wrote this in her diary, with this page later being recovered during an episode of Twin Peaks: The Return. No mention is made of Annie’s fate, however, but Mark Frost’s tie-in book Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier reveals that while she recovered from her physical injuries she remained in a catatonic state. Norma cared for her for a time before having to send her to a psychiatric hospital. Agent Tammy Preston – played by Chrysta Bell on The Return – visits her, though Annie doesn’t speak. Preston notes she doesn’t seem to have aged and that she utters the words “I’m fine” once a year at the exact same time of her kidnapping.

As for why Heather Graham didn’t return, it’s simply down to not being invited. The actress has stated she was open to appearing on Twin Peak: The Return but wasn’t asked. It’s likely neither David Lynch nor Mark Frost could find a way to include Annie on the series and decided it was best to leave her fate a mystery, which is also the reason characters like Joan Chen’s Josie weren’t featured.
