It’s hard to imagine another cast taking on the iconic Harry Potter characters but which actors would fit the bill if the movies were made in the USA?

What If Harry Potter Was Made In The USA (Recasting The Characters)

A partial reason for Harry Potter’s iconicity is based on its setting — an assorted group of students and their adventures that take place within the bounds of a classic British boarding school has been a part of great fiction ever since the era of Enid Blyton. Redefining these beloved characters as something quite different would require immense care and common sense.

What would an American Harry Potter look like? How would he behave? Would Hermione remain the nerdy know-it-all? Would Ron finally get over his arachnophobia? Would Dumbledore be more eccentric or less? Would Snape change in any way whatsoever? And finally, would Hogwarts turn into Riverdale High or the Constance Billard School for Girls?

10 Albus Dumbledore — Morgan Freeman

Dumbledore’s quiet nature belies his truly manic temperament: his mind works at a thousand miles a second, probably faster than a supercomputer given his reaction speed and flawless spellcasting. And then there’s the Headmasterly aura that emanates from every pore in this body.

Very few actors would be able to pull this off, but Morgan Freeman is certainly one of them. He plays God in Bruce Almighty (2003), and Dumbledore’s pretty much at that level in his own way, not to mention the sympathetic Ellis Boyd Redding in The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

9 Minerva McGonagall — Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep could be practically anyone and she would do it with total authority, to the point that she becomes the character. More than anything else, she’s blessed with versatility, having played high fashionistas, quirky witches, divorced mothers, famous chefs, British Prime Ministers, and more.

Professor McGonagall is going to be a cakewalk in this regard; however, since Dame Maggie Smith’s portrayal is already near perfection, it remains to be seen how Meryl Streep would plan to don the character.

8 Voldemort — Ezra Miller

As weird as it sounds, because Ezra Miller is Aurelius Dumbledore/Credence Barebone in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, he would simultaneously be the ideal Tom Riddle (at least before he turns into Lord Voldemort.)

In fact, with sufficient make-up and CGI, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be phenomenal as the snake-eyed, nose-less Dark Lord as well. Ezra Miller emits a powerful vibe through his dramatic persona, as seen in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and Afterschool (2008).

7 Ron Weasley — Josh Hutcherson

It’s rather difficult to find a redhead actor to fit Ron Weasley’s various eccentricities, many of which are covered rather satisfactorily by Rupert Grint. Then again, is it really necessary for him to have ginger hair? If so, all Josh Hutcherson has to do is get a salon job (as KJ Apa did for Riverdale) because he’s definitely the best choice here.

His Jess Aarons in the fantasy movie Bridge to Terabithia (2007) has received widespread acclaim, as well as his most iconic performance, Peeta Mellark.

6 Sirius Black — Brad Pitt

Casting Gary Oldman as Sirius Black was a sensible decision, but maybe not the most appropriate one. Rowling has made clear that Harry’s godfather was dashingly handsome in his youth, most of which has remained even after a dozen-plus years spent in Azkaban.

Brad Pitt, at his current age, would be an excellent Sirius: his paternal Gerry Lane in World War Z (2013), robust Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds (2009), and radical Tyler Durden in Fight Club (1999) basically settle the case on his behalf.

5 Harry Potter — Asher Angel

Asher Angel is a newcomer but has established himself as a rather fine actor even though he’s still a teenager. His first major motion picture casting has been in Shazam! (2019), in which he portrays a young Billy Batson who transforms into an older version of himself (who is also a superhero, except with his child-brain).

Besides, it’s not like Daniel Radcliffe was a renowned actor before he got the big break that ended up making him a cinematic legend.

4 Severus Snape — Joaquin Phoenix

Is this even up for consideration, really? Joaquin Phoenix is the only performer in existence who could match Alan Rickman’s slick depiction of the Hogwarts Professor of Potions, right from his sneering demeanor to his morbid appearance.

That being said, it counts that Phoenix is capable of complex roles that demand a lot of hidden depth, for instance in Joker (2019), Gladiator (2000), Walk the Line (2005), and You Were Never Really Here (2017). Another possibility for Severus Snape is veteran Spanish actor Javier Bardem.

3 Hermione Granger — Zendaya

Zendaya has made a permanent mark on American pop culture, with masterstrokes like Black-Ish, The OA, and Euphoria in the television sphere, but also as MJ, Spidey’s love interest, in the two recent Spider-Man movies.

She is universally talented, a feature that seems almost compulsory when deliberating on whether she can handle Hermione Granger. The answer is a resounding yes because Zendaya’s intrinsic fire will come in handy when having to save Harry and Ron from themselves.

2 Hagrid — Brad Garrett

Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid is spectacular, but not many people know that he originally began his career as a TV comedian (A Kick Up the Eighties, Alfresco, The Comic Strip Presents, to name a few shows.) One person who fits this category stunningly well, and happens to be nearly seven feet tall, is Everybody Loves Raymond’s, Brad Garrett.

The best part is that his deep, sonorous voice is exactly what one would expect from a half-Giant character like Hagrid, but he’d certainly need to maintain the timbre to match his character’s kindly tone.

1 Neville Longbottom — Forrest Wheeler

Forrest Wheeler is a TV novice, but his performance as Emery Huang in Fresh off the Boat has obtained some stellar praise. He plays a thoughtful, sensitive boy stuck between his extroverted rule-breaking big brother and fussy super-genius little brother, but is quite pleased with being in his position.

Although Neville has no siblings, his life is quite like that of a middle child, partly ignored and partly doted over. This could be an incredible combination of character and actor.
