What If Improved Daredevils Origin by Making It Iron Mans Fault

The hero Daredevil has an iconic origin, one that ties simultaneously directly into his greatest strength and weakness. Through exposure to dangerous radioactive chemicals in a tragic accident, Matt Murdock was blinded while at the same time gaining super-senses, including enhanced hearing, smell, touch, and a “radar sense” that lets him see (in a manner of speaking) in the same manner as bats and dolphins. But in What If…Daredevil Became an Agent of Shield?, written by Mike W. Barr and Frank Miller, with art by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson and colors by G. Wein, Daredevil’s origin is fundamentally tied to the much more popular Iron Man – and results in a new origin that ultimately benefits both characters.

In Daredevil’s original origin story, Matt Murdock is the son of “Battlin’ Jack” Murdock, a boxer who wants his son to have a better life than himself. He persuades Matt to help others and become a dedicated student, but after pushing a blind man out of the way of an oncoming truck, Matt is hit by the vehicle and rendered blind by the radioactive cargo. Looking to support his son, Matt’s father is offered a large payday if he throws a fight – but he can’t bear to do so when Matt is in the audience. Unfortunately, Jack Murdock is killed for his refusal to cooperate, which motivates Matt to become a lawyer and help the innocent by day…and adopt his Daredevil persona by night.

However, in this particular What If…? story, the truck full of chemicals belongs to Stark Industries – and Tony Stark, following the truck, finds Matt Murdock seconds after the accident. Taking him to a SHIELD hellicarrier, Tony immediately gets Matt the medical attention he desperately needs – but unfortunately, it’s too late to save his sight. After realizing Murdock has enhanced senses, Nick Fury muses that he would be the perfect field agent, and trains him accordingly.

Meanwhile, Jack Murdock has been captured by Hydra, and Matt abandons the hellicarrier in an attempt to save his father. The rescue mission is successful and Matt vows to be known by the nickname he had as a child – Daredevil. But this origin not only benefits Daredevil, getting him into “official” crimefighting with the government, it also connects him to Tony Stark. Daredevil and Iron Man aren’t known for being close in the comics, but if this origin was used in the MCU, it could either bring the two together – or breed resentment in Daredevil against Stark for turning his world upside-down.

In a much more positive turn of events, Jack Murdock is not killed in this reality, and Daredevil no longer needs to worry about maintaining a civilian secret identity. His law career unfortunately never materializes here, and Matt may never encounter his master Stick. Regardless, this new Daredevil origin brings both Murdock and Iron Man much closer together.
