A recent Nintendo leak revealed a plethora of assets and unused content for many of the company’s Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. All kinds of information, such as unused enemies and locations, cut multiplayer features and old prototype builds were revealed, and they reveal lots of information about the development of classic Nintendo games. One particular leak shows of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Temple of Time in far more detail than what’s shown in-game.

The Temple of Time is a central location in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that players visit to travel between the past and the future. It’s fully rendered on the inside, and the temple has since appeared in multiple new installments, such as Breath of the Wild’s Great Plateau and Twilight Princess’ full-blown Temple of Time dungeon. However, Ocarina of Time featured a handful of segments in which Link’s environments were pre-rendered images with a static camera, preventing the player from exploring freely. In the PlayStation and N64 era, this was a common practice and many major titles like Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil took advantage of it.

This technique is used far less in modern games since consoles are now able to fully render detailed 3D environments that offer players full control of the camera, without jarring or clashing visuals. Unfortunately for Ocarina of Time, its always had to deal with this issue since both its N64 release and the Nintendo 3DS remaster still locked the camera up during the scenes where pre-rendered images were originally used. However, the recent Nintendo leak revealed the full image of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Temple of Time, and now fans can see what the area truly looked like. The images have been re-posted on Twitter by Zelda Universe.

What The Temple Of Time Looks Like

Full view of an earlier pre-render of the Temple of Time in a panoramic view, from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It almost looks real! pic.twitter.com/dHcI8dfRkI

It’s fascinating to see this image that has been static for 20 years at a new angle, but that’s also the case for multiple The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time locations. The Castle Town Market, which used the same style of pre-rendered graphics, had its images leaked as well. There was also a never-before-seen location released that looks like it could be a beta version of the Temple of Time. The room starts with a massive door and ends with stairs and a pedestal, just like the final version, but the stone around the room is beige and there are multiple candles throughout the halls.

It’s possible that the location is a scrapped area or dungeon, but its more likely that its an early version of the Temple of Time that players never got to see until now. It’s also possible that its a scrapped portion of the Temple of Time that originally could have been home to the fabled and elusive Triforce. Either way, it’s unfortunate these leaks happened without Nintendo’s permission, but at least fans of classic Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will find joy in exploring this goldmine of previously unknown gaming history.
