What Must Happen To Rex Between Bad Batch & Rebels

Clone Captain Rex is back in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, but what must happen to the fan-favorite Clone Trooper before the events of Star Wars Rebels? Captain Rex regularly appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, serving as a co-protagonist alongside Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fifteen years after the Clone Wars ended, Rex is seen on Seelos, keeping away from the Empire alongside fellow clones Wolffe and Gregor before the three veterans join the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Rex is a noticeably different character in Rebels when compared to his appearance in Bad Batch, so substantial character development must have happened to him between the shows.

A Clone Captain within the Republic’s 501st Legion, Rex fought Separatist Alliance’s forces across the galaxy, starting with the First Battle of Geonosis. As shown throughout The Clone Wars, Rex has developed greatly as a character, starting as a “tightly wound” officer, but gradually learning to question orders and defend the intrinsic humanity of all Clone Troopers. Rex also formed close friendships with Jedi, such as Ahsoka, Anakin, and Obi-Wan, in addition to his men in the 501st and Commander Cody of the 212th. At the end of the Clone Wars, Rex learned the horrific true purpose of himself and all other clones when Order 66 was activated, but thanks to Ahsoka (and the deceased clone Fives), Rex regained his free will and fled the Empire.

As shown in The Bad Batch season 1, episode 7, “Battle Scars,” Rex is determined to continue fighting for the Republic, despite it being destroyed and replaced by the Empire thanks to Palpatine’s coup. Rex sought out the Bad Batch shortly after visiting Cut Lawquane on Saleucami. In both cases, Rex warned the fellow clones about their control chip implants, which, upon activation, removed a clone’s free will and turned them into a pawn of the Empire. When Rex is seen again in Rebels season 2, he no longer wants to fight against the Empire, settling for a simpler life on Seelos with two other clones. At some point between the two shows, Rex must decide that fighting the Empire and defending a dead Republic is futile.

As evidenced by The Bad Batch, Rex’s primary goal may be to seek out any clone who didn’t follow Order 66 and ensure that they don’t become pawns of the Empire. This might also lead to Rex attempting to remove the chips of certain clones who did become brainwashed, such as his friend Commander Cody. While a lofty endeavor, fighting for democracy has been Rex’s purpose throughout his life and turning clones against the Empire could be a critical blow against its spreading autocracy. As shown in Rebels, Rex will come into contact with Commander Wolffe and the Clone Commando Gregor at some point, likely helping them remove their control chips as well. He ages visibly in this time as well, a combination of the span of years and his more rapid aging as a clone, complete with a white beard that matches those of Wolffe and Gregor, while the trio live together in an old AT-TE.

While Rex no longer wishes to fight when he’s reintroduced in Rebels, he’s neither bitter nor cynical. When Ezra and the other Rebels help save Rex from Imperial forces, Rex’s will to fight is reignited, leading him to join the Rebellion. In The Bad Batch, Rex’s mission to find other clones and restore the Republic obviously won’t be successful, and this is what probably leads Rex to see fighting the Empire as futile by the time the Rebels find him on Seelos. Rex may end up gathering a sizeable number of clones to fight, but the only ones who end up surviving are him, Wolffe, and Gregor. Rex’s seeming failure to fight against the Empire would provide the connective tissue between Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels.
