What To Expect From Star Wars Resistance Season 3

Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance has come to an end, but will the animated series get a season 3? Star Wars Resistance season 1 began just prior to the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and saw Poe Dameron recruit Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono as a spy for the Resistance. Season 2 would take Kaz and his friends across the galaxy as they tried to outrun the First Order and bring the animated series up to and past the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars Resistance is only the latest Star Wars animated series, following the first series to come under the new Disney banner, Star Wars Rebels. That show was a sequel of sorts to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which originally aired on Cartoon Network from 2008 to 2013, with the final batch of episodes released on Netflix in 2014. The Clone Wars is being revived for seventh and final season that will premiere on Disney+ in February 2020.

As for Star Wars Resistance, its second season has now wrapped. But is Star Wars Resistance season 2 the end? Here’s what we know about the animated show’s future.

Star Wars Resistance Season 2 is the Final Season

What To Expect From Star Wars Resistance Season 3

Star Wars Resistance season 2 is the final season of the animated series and it has not been renewed for a season 3. The story of Star Wars Resistance is largely wrapped up by the end of the season 2 finale, with Tam having rejoined her friends on the Colossus and the First Order forces who were pursuing them all destroyed. The ending of Star Wars Resistance doesn’t directly lead into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker or feature a reappearance of movie characters like General Leia or Poe Dameron, but it does end in such a way that its characters can still have roles in the saga’s final battle. In fact, the Colossus and the Fireball are said to appear alongside the Resistance fleet during the Battle of Exegol.

What Star Wars Resistance Season 3’s Story Could Be About

However, were Star Wars Resistance’s story to somehow continue – either in another animated series or tie-in books and comics – there is still the period of time between the show’s ending and The Rise of Skywalker left to be explored. Roughly a year goes by between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and seeing as Resistance doesn’t end where The Rise of Skywalker begins, there is still a part of the timeline left untouched.

This could cover the Colossus meeting up with those of the Resistance who survived the Battle of Crait and possibly even the spy missions led by Poe and Finn seen at the start of The Rise of Skywalker. After all, Kaz was recruited by Poe to be a spy for the Resistance so it’d make perfect sense for him to join Poe and Finn on some of those missions. Not to mention, characters like Tam and Tora are sure to become more involved as well, with Tam wishing to atone for her time spent with the First Order and Tora likely eager to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Star Wars Resistance has spent the better part of its two seasons establishing a fun cast of characters that it would be shame to never get to see them in action as true members of the Resistance.

There are also characters like the young orphan, Eila and Mika Grey who it’s implied are Force-sensitive. Unlike both The Clone Wars and Rebels, Resistance never focused heavily on the Jedi or Sith, but further exploration of its Force-sensitive characters would open up more avenues for Star Wars Resistance’s story to continue even beyond The Rise of Skywalker.
