Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys has seen its popularity greatly increase in season 2. The show was already one of Amazon’s biggest original pieces of content when it debuted in 2019. Still, the weekly episode rollout for season 2 has allowed interest in the series to continue to grow.

Following the surprising events of season 1, The Boys season 2 picks up shortly after, with both The Boys and The Seven changing. Billy Butcher’s focus almost completely turned towards finding his wife and her son. At the same time, The Boys continued trying to take down Vought by any means necessary – including leaking Compound V to the public. Back at Vought, the arrival of Stormfront shook up The Seven and Homelander. She joined the team and eventually struck up a romantic relationship with Homelander. But, arguably, the most important role Stormfront played in season 2 was how she helped The Boys explore more of the past.

Even before the release of season 2, Amazon confirmed that The Boys would return for season 3. The announcement was made during Comic-Con@Home in 2020. It is expected that the new season will once again be eight episodes long. Showrunner Eric Kripke is back to serve as the showrunner, while Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and more will continue to produce the series.

The Boys season 3 is confirmed, but when it will be seen on Amazon Prime Video is not. The first season was released in late July 2019, while season 2 ran from September to October with its new weekly episode release format. Given the success that The Boys has had in the late summer/early fall window, it would be understandable if Amazon wants to keep season 3 in a similar time frame. However, filming will reportedly begin in early 2021, so a late 2021 release is the best-case scenario. If the production takes longer, though, then it is possible The Boys season 3 won’t arrive until 2022. This would make for a much longer gap between new seasons of the show than fans had to endure between seasons 1 and 2.

The Boys Season 3 Story Details

The story of The Boys season 3 will be better understood after the season 2 finale, but there is one detail that is already public knowledge. It was previously announced Jensen Ackles would play Soldier Boy in The Boys season 3. Soldier Boy is the original Supe in the comics that becomes a mantle taken by many over the years. If this backstory is kept for the series, season 3 will again dive deeper into Vought, Compound V, and Supes’ history. A tease from early on in season 2 indicated that this would be the case, but that could change after Stormfront’s true origins. Other than the addition of Soldier Boy, it should be expected that the main cast members will be back for The Boys season 3 too.
