What Type of Walkie Talkie The Kids Use In Stranger Things

The kids in Stranger Things may not have smartphones back in the 1980s, but they are equipped with handy walkie talkies usable throughout Hawkins. It’s kind of crazy just how much the world has changed from a technological standpoint since the mid-80s setting of Netflix hit Stranger Things. The current generation of college students doesn’t even remember a time when the internet and cell phones didn’t exist as a ubiquitous part of life, yet both things were still in their infancy in the 1980s.

While online culture certainly has its drawbacks, one of its greatest strengths is the ability of people to communicate instantly, from basically any place to any other place, with little to no effort. Friends and family never need lose touch thanks to social media and text messaging, and connecting with someone else is always just a click away. In Stranger Things, Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven, and company aren’t blessed with this same type of tech, but manage to get around that by using what was available at the time, most notably walkie talkies.

It only makes sense that Stranger Things fans and those who generally appreciate 1980s electronic devices might wonder exactly what kind of walkie talkie Hawkins’ resident monster fighters make use of. Here’s the lowdown.

Stranger Things’ Kids Use Realistic TRC-206, 214, & 219 Walkie Talkies In The Series

During the three seasons of Stranger Things released so far, Mike and friends use Realistic brand walkie talkies when communicating throughout Hawkins. As far as the specific model numbers go, season 1 primarily featured the TRC-214 model, but models TRC-206, and TRC-219 have also been used by characters on the series. These devices retailed for about $30 back in the mid-1980s, so while they certainly weren’t luxury items, they weren’t extremely cheap either, especially when considering that that price equals over $70 in today’s money.

Likely due to the fact that walkie talkies aren’t nearly as widely used today as they were in the 1980s, one can actually buy products roughly equivalent to the TRC-214 models for about the same $30 price tag today. One can also buy cell phone cases that make their smartphone look like a Stranger Things walkie talkie, although they don’t necessarily fit every type of phone. T-Mobile offered specialized limited edition replica walkie talkie phone cases last year around the debut of season 3, but they’re no longer available to buy. While the Realistic walkie talkies are no longer made, fans that can’t live without one can find them selling used on marketplaces on Ebay, but often for a steep markup from their original retail price.
