What Unmasked Michael Myers Looks Like In Halloween Kills

Warning: SPOILERS for Halloween Kills.

Halloween Kills unmasks Michael Myers for the first time in years and prominently reveals his face. A sequel to 2018’s Halloween, itself a revival of the franchise and a sequel to John Carpenter’s original Halloween movie from 1978, Halloween Kills sees Michael Myers once again on the hunt for Laurie Strode and her family. It was believed that Michael Myers had died in Halloween’s ending, but his breathing in the credits confirmed his survival and now he’s back for two more entries in the series.

Throughout the final trailers and promos for Halloween Kills, Laurie Strode talked about wanting to unmask Michael Myers so she could see the life drain from his eyes. It’s a curious thing to do, because the mask is as symbolic as the character himself, a representation of a faceless, perpetual threat. But unmasking him is something the Halloween franchise has done before. In fact, in Halloween (1978), Laurie managed to remove Michael Myers’ mask when he attacked her towards the end of the film; and at the time, he was portrayed by Tony Moran. Similar situations have happened in the various sequels and reboots, but now, for the second time in canon, audiences can see Michael Myers’ unmasked face.

Instead of Laurie Strode unmasking Michael Myers in Halloween Kills, though, the act was performed by her daughter, Karen Nelson, towards the end of the film. She did so to protect her own daughter, Allyson, from being killed by Michael. Karen unmasked Michael Myers and lured him into a trap where several other people from Haddonfield were waiting for him. Curiously, while there’s a wide shot in which Michael Myers’ face can be seen in full, it’s out of focus, and the close-up that happens moments later is incredibly dark (seen below, though this image has been brightened).

Technically, Michael Myers was unmasked throughout the beginning of Halloween (2018), but the front of his face was never shown. Here, in Halloween Kills, audiences get to see part of the front but mostly a side profile of Michael Myers’ face. It was a smart decision to peel back the veil that is Michael Myers by removing his mask and showing just enough to satisfy fans, yet leaving more to the imagination since it’s nearly impossible to discern who Michael Myers is in the movie; he’s still a mystery because Halloween Kills doesn’t show his face in its entirety.

With Halloween Ends set to be the final installment in this new Halloween trilogy, it’ll be the final opportunity to fully reveal Michael Myers’ face, whether he’s played by James Jude Courtney, who’s the main actor in costume as Michael Myers in Blumhouse’s films, or Nick Castle, who originated the role in Carpenter’s film, even though he was only the person underneath the mask.
