What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 Episode 10 The Portrait Recap & Spoilers

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 10, “The Portrait,” now available on Hulu via FX.

As Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows neared its conclusion, there was less of the bawdy humor the show is known for and more attention paid to the vampires’ existential crises. Currently, they’re dealing with the death of their friend and housemate, Colin Robinson, but Guillermo doesn’t think they’re dealing with it very well. Rather than process their feelings about the energy vampire’s passing, they’ve hired Donal Logue to paint a new portrait of them. The veteran sitcom actor turned vampire picked up art as a hobby during the second season of Grounded for Life. While Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, the Baron, the Sire, the Guide, the hellhound and even Guillermo pose for the new painting, Logue — affable as ever — bores them with stories about the entertainment industry.

The point of the new portrait is that Colin isn’t in it. That way, they can hang it above their fireplace, forget about him forever and heal. But it’s clear from their spirited bickering that the healing hasn’t begun. Laszlo insists he’s over it, even though he can’t bring himself to say goodbye to Colin’s corpse. Nandor hurls obscenities and accuses Nadja of masking her pain with jokes, to which Nadja fires back that Nandor wouldn’t know a punchline if it ran over his scrotum with a penny farthing. Everyone but the Baron and the Sire storm off in different directions.

Of course, Guillermo’s right. This whole season has been about the vampires finding purpose in the banality of immortality, and none of them have gotten the necessary closure as it pertains to their personal issues and to Colin. However, Guillermo doesn’t have purely altruistic reasons for wanting to help his friends process their grief. He thinks that adding a new vampire to the house (i.e. him) will restore balance and fix everything.

Unfortunately for Guillermo, Nandor has other ideas. As he reminds us, he was thrice thwarted in his search for love, plus he learned about the big bang theory, which really messed with his head. He thinks that some extended international travel will cure what ails him. He’s always wanted to see the Colossus of Rhodes and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but he can also sense the vampire pod breaking up and he doesn’t want to be the last one left. Nadja thinks some travel will do her and Laszlo good, too. She also recognizes that he’s struggling with Colin’s “very disgusting and tragic death” even though Laszlo says that he “couldn’t give a tinker’s fig.” But when she suggests they take a trip to England, Laszlo becomes irate as long ago, he vowed never to return.

Guillermo follows Nadja to her room, to consult with her about Nandor’s plan to leave. She barely listens, struggles to operate her VCR, and eventually plays Guillermo a tape in which Taika Waititi’s Viago, one of the leaders of the World Vampiric Council, offers her a huge promotion. But the job’s in London…where Laszlo’s sworn never to return. Nadja confesses to Guillermo that she really wants to take the position (she’ll finally have something to do with her “stupid eternal life”) but she can’t leave her man. Rather than sympathize with her conundrum, he hatches a plan that he hopes will keep all three vampires on Staten Island.

Guillermo visits with Laszlo, who’s seated as his piano and reiterates through song that he’ll never set food in the United Kingdom again. The reason? For generations, his family belonged to the Sherwood Club, but after some undisclosed treachery, he was kicked out by a unanimous vote. Guillermo’s feeling good about his chances to keep his chosen family together. Laszlo and Nadja seem likely to stay, and though Nandor still wants to go, Guillermo knows vampires often make grand plans they don’t stick to. But this time, Nandor has the Guide giving him advice. Making vampire travel arrangements is the only fun part of her job, and she’s already assisting Nandor with the particulars. She suggests he put his ancestral dirt in a Jansport, and travel by night because it’s not only safer for vampires, it’s usually cheaper.

The housemates reassemble so that Donal Logue can finish their portrait, and Guillermo takes the opportunity to make a case for staying together, but Nadja interrupts him and blurts out the news of her promotion, and Nandor tacks on the news about his upcoming Eat Pray Love journey. Nadja knows about the Sherwood Club, though not the particulars of Laszlo’s expulsion, but she thinks Laszlo’s being selfish. He finally comes clean with the whole story. The club didn’t care about his libertine dalliances or even that he was a vampire, but they drew the line at his marriage to her: a Greek commoner. When Nadja reminds him that she’ll be returning to London with a heightened status, Laszlo quickly relents.

Guillermo’s plan has all but fallen apart. After Donal Logue finishes the painting, a desperate Guillermo confronts Nandor. He claims that Nandor’s only alive because of his protection and because he — a vampire hunter — lets him live. Nandor counters that it’s merely vampire hypnosis, but Guillermo reveals that the hypnosis didn’t work. The two have a pretty brutal hallway-style fight in which Guillermo comes out on top. Nandor then proclaims he passed the test; he’s proven his character, and Guillermo can now accompany him on his journey. Better yet, Nandor will make Guillermo a vampire once they reach the shores of his homeland. The exchange has the feel of a marriage proposal. It seems, at long last, Guillermo’s dreams are coming true.

Nandor and Guillermo have a train to catch, but Laszlo and Nadja need help getting their caskets onto the boat first. Guillermo thinks it’s strange that Laszlo has packed Oreos and Pedialyte since he can’t eat or drink, and in a final twist, Laszlo pushes Guillermo into his own casket and nails it shut, as the screaming bodyguard protests. Via a sweet, poetic letter, he explains to Nadja that “Gizmo” is a good bodyguard and will take care of her, even though he knows she doesn’t need taken care of. It turns out that Laszlo did pay his respects to Colin, and what he found changed everything. The corpse in Colin’s bed bore a giant hole, out of which came a trail of goo that led to another room in the basement. There, Laszlo happened upon a newborn baby version of Colin Robinson, and decided that it needed him more than Nadja. Meanwhile, Nandor gets on the train by his lonesome, frustrated that Guillermo didn’t show up to accompany him.
