Though there are many iconic vampires in movies and television, Nandor from What We Do in the Shadows is certainly one of the funniest. Despite being an ancient being and supposedly a feared warrior, Nandor is a fairly clueless and incompetent vampire which is endlessly funny to watch.
Whether he is ordering around his “familiar” Guillermo, squabbling with his housemates, or dealing with his own crisis as a modern vampire, Nandor has delivered some of the best lines in the series. These hilarious quotes are a reminder of why What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best shows on television.
10 “Count Bakula!”
What We Do in the Shadows has a lot of great cameos and fun guest stars that pop up. However, one of the briefest appearances on the show also made for one of its funniest gags.
In almost a throwaway moment, actor Scott Bakula is shown doing a video call with Nadja. Just as the audience starts to wonder why the vampires would want to talk to the star of Quantum Leap, Nandor enters and refers to him as “Count Bakula,” making the misunderstanding hilariously clear. It is such a simple yet rewarding joke.
9 “But He Should Not Have Done So Much Slaughtering.”
Though Nandor’s relationship with Guillermo is always a little one-sided as Nandor just orders his familiar around, it changes in an interesting way in season 3. After Guillermo saves Nandor and the others by killing the vampiric council, Nandor starts to have more respect for him.
While the other vampires think Guillermo is too risky to keep around, Nandor defends him. Though he does admit he went overboard with the murder of so many vampires but says it as if Guillermo had neglected his chores rather than kill undead creatures.
8 “This Big Bang Theory Is Actually Very Good. Very Faithful To The Slot Machine.”
In one of the few episodes that take the gang outside of Staten Island sees them go to visit Atlantic City. Of all the things to do, Nandor gets addicted to playing a Big Bang Theory slot machine that he ends up loving.
Back in the hotel room, later on, Nandor finds Big Bang Theory on television. He admits that it is an enjoyable show but assumes it is based on the slot machine. The groundwork that was laid for that joke was well worth it as it is one of Nandor’s hilariously out-of-touch moments.
7 “You Can’t Hypnotize A Subject That Doesn’t Want To Do Something That You Want Them To Do.”
The show has a lot of fun exploring the different aspects of vampire lore, including the special powers some of them have, such as hypnosis. Of course, Nandor is not the most impressive of vampires which means his hypnotizing skills are lackluster.
Nandor gets defensive when Colin Robinson mocks his failure to hypnotize some humans. He explains that it is difficult to make the subjects do what he wants if they don’t want to, but Colin Robinson rightly explains that’s the whole point of hypnotism.
6 “What Is ‘Arise’ Again? Ctrl-Alt-7?”
A lot of the best humor in the show comes from the vampires trying and failing to understand modern concepts. Though they have been alive for centuries, they are surprisingly slow to pick up on the changes in the world, especially technology.
When Nandor is attempting to use the computer, he thinks that it is broken only for Guillermo to explain that it is sleeping. Nandor then attempts to literally command it to “arise” before asking for the actual command keys.
5 “I Would Not Even Remember Your Name If It Wasn’t Written On The Piece Of Paper I Keep In My Pocket At All Times.”
Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows finds Nandor experiencing a bit of a self crisis and actually doubting if he even wants to be a vampire anymore. In his state of depression, he even turns on his roommates with his honest opinions of them.
After insulting the others, Colin Robinson asks for his turn as he thinks it looks fun. But Nandor’s insistence that he barely even knows who Colin Robinson is despite them living together for years is far harsher than anyone expected.
4 “Well, How Am I Going To Eat If I Don’t Prey On People, Dummy?”
The finale of the third season sees Nandor continuing his quest of self-discovery and deciding to leave Staten Island. Though Guillermo is quite against the idea, Nandor insists it will be very healthy for him.
He explains that he is going to see the world and experience an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment for himself. When Guillermo questions that he is going to be praying, Nandor responds, “Well, how am I going to eat if I don’t prey on people, dummy?”
3 “I Am Going To Sprinkle It On My Face And On My Body. Like Twilight.”
Fans of vampire movies will see a lot of different ones referenced throughout the series. In some cases, the vampires are even aware of modern movies about their kind and take inspiration from them.
When the powerful Baron Afanas is coming to visit, the vampires look for ways to impress him. Nandor asks Guillermo to get him some “colorful dust that sparkles” (glitter) so he can put it on his body to look like Robert Pattinson from Twilight.
2 “I Don’t Give A F*** What Your Name Is, We Had To Pick Up Our Own Laundry.”
Though he began the show as a passive and timid young man, Guillermo has gone through a lot of growth throughout the series. Finally, in season 2, he is ready to move on from being a familiar and leaves Nandor and the other vampires.
This results in Nandor and the others having to do their own chores and look after themselves for the first time which goes hilariously wrong. When Guillermo reveals himself as a vampire killer by slaughtering the vampiric council, Nandor is still livid that he had to deal with his own laundry.

While the vampires often get involved in serious and life-threatening situations, they also know how to have fun. It is very entertaining to see them cut loose as they take Count Afanas out on the town for some partying.
After going to a club and feasting on some people on the dance floor, they realize they were on drugs which have some fun effects on the vampires. It is a hilarious concept that is not seen in other vampire movies.
